Maybe there could be a 'basic' tier that doesn't have a monthly fee but includes dynamic in-game/load screen ads ala YouTube.

Pay for a month, beat the game, cancel the subscription. I don't see it as that difficult- and at US$15/month, perhaps more economical, even for just one game.

Just FYI, you can unlock most or all of the characters on DoA5 just by playing the game, and a lot of the alt costumes too. By the time you're good enough to play online you'd probably already have most of the content unlocked, on the free to play version no less.

Sounds like a square peg into round hole idea. It'll work so long as we can force it onto consumers.

$15 to play the game or $15 to buy the game? I've been through that with World of Warcraft and quit for that very reason. I don't want to race through a game to avoid the $15 payment. That's the reason why people quit after 2-3 months because they want to avoid the subscription. I have played on a private server like Light's Hope and that was amazing and totally free. Before anyone calls me a pirate, I do indeed own physical copies of WoW.

Doesn't change the cost of DLC which I think was $90? Anything beyond $60 is insane for any game.

I agree, to a point. Some games have an entire game worth of dlc. Imo generally it should be a separate game, but the value is there.

I haven't been keeping myself up to date with the latest GPU news, but IIRC the last AMD offering was around the level of a RTX 2080
So, can I expect this PS5 Navi to be better than that? Or maybe a cut down version that is at least on par with RTX 2080.

Around ~ Nvidia 1080 level performance should be your expectation with the Navi chip.

(Proabably roughly Vega 64 performance levels is about where Navi was rumored to fall out at a $250 price point —- bringing quite a bit of performance for the price. The CPU will be an 8 core Ryzen. That’s quite a bit of performance still - but no you aren’t getting a $700 graphics card and a $200 CPU, not to mention try other components in a $500 console. Consoles usually have small hardware loss per initial sale or even break even. No way Sony will do what you are hoping for with 2080 or Radeon VII level performance. Just can’t do it for the price.

Source of the video? Looks like it has an SSD. About time. Those 5400 RPM drives really hold consoles back.

I will stick with my PS3 & stick a Samsung 850 Pro SSD in that ;) Bought a PS4 & have literally turned it on a handful of times in the 4 years it has sat in the living room (most of those was to update the firmware!). As the price of the PS4 used market has plummeted, it is not worth me selling it and may as well keep it for when the original "fat" 60GB (with hardware Emotion Engine PS2 compatiability!) PS3 gives up the ghost. That reminds me it is time I opened it up again & gave that massive fan in the base of it a good clean out as it is getting noisy once more!

Couldn't tell you how many times over the years I nearly pulled the trigger on ordering one from Amazon/Ebay. I remember thru the years the typical model changes that have happened with PS's and watching the PS3 de-evolve. It was sad. The PS2 was the only model I can remember that actually got better when the slim came out. Even researched replacement optical drives for specific model PS3 as I heard that continued to be the weakest part(common to both the PS2 and PS3). Honestly one of the best PS gens ever made. I understand Sony's long term vision with many different costs and why they walked away from that IBM based cpu but when they failed to completely support backwards compatibility with the PS4 it really pushed me away. This PS5 has got me very interested though. Over the years the PS4 has built up a nice exclusive game catalog and already hearing rumors of things coming down the road for both.

I am not a console gamer by a long shot - heck, I am not even a PC gamer really as only recently started playing PC games again!!! I bought the PS4 really for the Wife & step daughter to use as a karaoke machine with SingStar when they have friends over when I am fishing, and they use the PS3 due to the number of add-on discs we have for the game along with DLC. The PS4 version is installed on the PS4 but half the DLC licenses are not available on the PS4 & the DLC for the PS4 is also available in the PS3 version so they keep everything in one place. Sony killed off the title as well so no reason to use the PS4 until the PS3 dies now. I don't use either as media players as have a Sony X800 4K/UHD BluRay player.

While it's awesome that load times are finally going to be reduced, I'm going to need more than load times to make me want to buy another console. I'm one of those idiots that buys all of them and it feels like they're getting less use than ever.
Other than 5-6 exclusives, nearly everything is also on the PC now. I'm going to need some compelling other features.

I feel that way about my Xbox. I use my switch as a handheld semi often and PS4 go to for streaming and a few friends that don’t do PC...but the Xbox is...well ignored outside of the rare once a month get together couch co-op games. Halo (collection) and Gears are still fantastic for that.

It really should be a feature. Not just for gaming, but as a computing appliance in general. I'd love to see a Chromebook-esque interface on the Xbox, and with Microsoft being as good with input hardware as they are, give us a laptop-style keyboard with the trackpad on the right for browsing and editing documents and whatever else. And hell, now that Edge is Chromium, it should be pretty tight, right?

xbone and PS4 both support kb/mouse input, but it's mostly limited to text input and browsing, especially on PS4. Might be able to navigate the interface on PS4 with a mouse, not sure.

5-6 that suit your tastes, the full list is massively bigger but it's comprised of different kinds of niche games so I can understand perfectly that it's not compelling enough for you :)

I know I sound like an old man here, btw get off my lawn, but man I miss the late 90's/early 2000's when we had such a diverse eco-system for both pc(gpu's) and consoles. Where dev's didn't just focus on the newest models but continued to make things for the previous ones too giving players so many choices on what they wanted.

Both Microsoft and Sony leave it up to the devs to support keyboard and mouse in their games on consoles now, meaning with all the crybabies whinging about "muh competition" it will never happen on a large scale.

Production costs and maintenance costs have skyrocketed... that kills a lot of 'choice' because choice is hard to do while maintaining economy of scale, for the hardware, for the games, and for the maintenance.

About the only positive thing we're seeing along the lines of our collective reminiscing is that both Sony and Microsoft are continuing to use x86 and RTG IP, such that we will likely see games released that will target the originally released PS4 and Xbox One consoles, and everything released since. Indie games fall into that category, but even many / most AAA games can be 'downported' given the continuity of software and hardware.

Ray tracing in it's current form is as much of a scam as the "cloud power" they where pushing for the last consoles.

I've seen it work incredible well, and it's only going to get better...

That's far from a scam. Someday AMD will catch up.

I will get better but the graphics in the console will not be good enough for real time ray tracing, yet they will be saying "RaY tRaCiNg." That is the scam part of it.

What I would personally like more than ray tracing is an interactive world with a real destructible environment (not scripted) with decent graphics. E.g.: mercenaries 2 but with modern graphics, real destructible environments and crysis item interactions. Game play over some lens flares and mirrors.

This does really depend on the implementation, though. Ray tracing can be done very selectively for consoles such that performance is maintained while visuals are markedly improved. Obviously we're not going to see any Metro Last Light level graphics with ray tracing.

This is certainly possible this generation with the leap (back) to desktop-grade components. Maybe a developer will see the demand for such a game?

A little OT since it doesn't pertain to consoles, but you should take a look at the flight sim scene. $90 for a single third-party commercial airliner is pretty standard.
