looking for FREE software to Permently and forever wipe a hdd clean thanks
 
Make sure you have no other disks in the system when you execute the erase.

Gparted and possible partition magic have secure erase utilities but I use this from a boot disc:

CMRR - Center for Memory and Recording Research

It uses the ATA internal wipe function. It's much faster than doing something like multi-pass overwrites and satisfies the NIST standards for media sanitation.

If you have a linux boot disk HDParm can do something similar.
