WinXP install problem - disc or drive?

I just built a new system, and have been having major problems getting WinXP installed and working. Here are the system specs:
Shuttle XPC SN25P
Athlon 64 3500+
Corsair TwinX1024-3200XL
Western Digital WD2500JD
ATI Radeon X800XL
NEC 16X Dual Layer DVD Burner (ND-3520A)

I put the system together correctly and it posted fine. I then proceeded to put in my WinXP disc to install it (if it matters, the disc is an original OEM copy that I bought around the time XP was originally released). The disc booted fine, formatted the HD, then went into the GUI part of the install... this is where the headaches begin... :(

At this point, the install was going slooooooooooooooow (even compared to installing XP on older Athlon XP boxes). I kept getting errors with WinXP telling me that certain files could not be loaded, and I let it proceed. Once it was done installing, I booted into XP, and I could not access my DVD burner, so I couldn't load up any drivers or system files needed to operate any onboard peripherals. No optical drive, no sound, no video drivers, no chipset drivers, no LAN...

At this point, I looked at my WinXP disc. Now I realize that it is about 4 years old, and it looks fairly scratched. I tried to clean it off with 100% isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs, and gave installing XP another try. No luck - the disc still looked to be in bad shape.

At this point, I began to search around the web, and in these forums. Here are a couple of links that reflect almost exactly the same problem as mine:

Same problem: scratched XP install disc, same DVD burner, and installing to a SATA drive.

Any advice at this point?
