Hello Lads,
so I am in the process of reinstalling WinXP on my secondary machine after sacrificing its old boot disk to my server. So it is going from a 74GB Raptor to a 160 GB PATA Maxtor drive. While I know that it is quite a downgrade, I do not use it for much besides testing stuff.
Anyway, I made myself a nice WinXPx64 disc using nLite in order to just "set it and forget it", but it doesn't want to work. I set the boot order to boot from the PATA HDD first, then manually override it to boot from the USB CD-ROM to install it.
So far so good, the WinXP media finds the HDD, lets me format it and copies the data. On the next reboot, I get a "NTLDR: cannot access multi(0)...disk(0)partition(1)" message (the ... are for some more info that i cannot recall) and it stops there.
I have troubleshot the following:
so I am a bit confused as to what the problem could be. I am wondering whether I should try the other PATA port that in the on the mobo, but I would be suprised that the drive passes the diagnostic test. I am considering to just run one stick of RAM, but I doubt that 2 errors will have my WinXP install fail at the same time on 7+ occasions.
Any ideas, suggestions? I am too tired to try the other PATA port tonight, but I will try it tomorrow.
System specs:
A8N-E
X2-3800+
1GB RAM (2x512, Mushkin)
PCIe 6600 128MB
some PCI GbE card
NEC 3540 internal and LiteON 52x CD-RW (USB)

I have troubleshot the following:
- Install from stock XPx64 media - fail
- Install from nLite XP-32 media that worked fine for my workstation - fail
- I ran memtest for ~ 5 hours, got a total of 4 errors, all occuring during test 5, at 801.9 and 823.9 MB. I looped test 5 for 2+ hours, but the errors occured only during pass 0, not any later pass. Rerunning all tests, yielded another set of these errors, but nothing else. Talking to (cf)eclipse, he thinks that my RAM is stable enough for an install - fail
- swap IDE cable!! - fail
- run Maxtor diagnostics: While the diagnostics (full test and short test AND low-level full format) pass, I still cannot install, so - fail
- install from internal DVD drive instead (tried all three install media) - fail
- format full/ fast upon install - fail
- create more than 1 partition - fail
- create a small boot partition (<40GB) - fail
