Any precautions that I should take with winter coming? My folding rig is in my garage and even though it is a space heater I do think it will get below freezing in the garage. It is of course air cooled.
 
The only problems I've heard of with computers in low temperatures only happen when temps are liquid nitrogen low.

As long as its air cooled I don't think it would be a problem.

Anyway, you should be fine where its air cooled. If it was water-cooled than bringing it inside would be a good idea, but air is just fine, infact, your CPU will love you more! :)

A lot of folders use their boxen for heat. Electricity is cheaper than gas for most if not all. If you peruse the history throughout this forum, you'll see story after story backing this, even a few people who keep their windows open in February.

heat is free in my apartment. Leaving the box outside should help it draw less power by running cooler plus more overclocks!!!

I was more worried about cold embrittlement of plastic or metal parts. Plus most of the gear is is recommended to run in an environment of 32-90 degrees F..

Unless the humidity is really high I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Good advice here, regardless of rather you pay for heat or not...

My boxen heat the living room in my house during the winter... seriously.

Rather you pay for heat or not, if you can turn your thermostat down, your saving energy, which is a good thing, right???

Resident enviormentalist here! (or just someone very practical)

btw, I just started folding, as I got 2 new GPUs this week... (better then laptop folding).

Mongolian winter winds = Tropical Taiwan freeze!

But in general, it's warmer, and much more humid here. (and because everybody is running A/C, it's hot over the night, too)!
 
I have rooms in the house where the vents are shut so I don't have to heat them.

Although with out Origami Master bringing up the base heat lvl in the house, I'll have to figure something out.

I wish I had that type of rig (and the electrical wiring to support it!).

At the moment, it takes the 4350 7 hours to complete a work unit
9500GT 4 hours
9800GT (friend, I getting one, again, soon) 50 min!

Maybe I'm getting the definition of a WU wrong, as this is based off of the visual representation's time estimate.
 
I shut the heat vent and open my windows up here in Washington, so that's winterizing for me....As far as winterizing your rigs go, I think you'll just have to overclock them to avoid them running too cool.

Obvious answer. :D

Yeah, don't use that. For monitoring F@H, use a program like FahMon, HFM.NET, or FahSpy. The GPU client viewer will kill the performance of your F@H client and is basically useless.
 
ahhhh, a computer heated house.... those were the days.

oh yea, my house is still computer heated. Too bad it still needs AC cooling in the winter.

enjoy the OCing that winter brings. and bring it inside for the extra heat. while you are at it maybe build a couple of pizza boxen or ferret boxen to heat outlying rooms

 
I use my PS3 for my bedroom at the moment and I just brought my main rig online tonight to heat the office, once I get the server rack in the basement that should cover that :)

havnt needed the furnace yet, although tonight its 33* brrrr, Army got me used to 100+, this 30's shit is killing me

And Kendrak, when did you get a white shirt? Ive got that one but in black, would be nice to have it in a grey hoodie or something

Or maybe we should make a team 33 hoodie....

"She" is doing a great job keeping my home office toasty. Looking forward to temperature drops here in TX so I can open my window and even things out a bit :D

I keep a Summer OC Profile and a Winter OC Profile (balls out, kick it in high gear type of profile).

In North TX, it is still in the mid 80's. Of course here in MSP where I am working, it's in the 40's and raining.

So true. I live in a 3rd floor apartment. Had multiple Quads and 9800GX2s running last winter. We only turned our heat on one day during all of last winter. We're in the Chicago suburbs too, so it does get cold. It was a day where it was 0 without wind chill. It was either wrap yourself with a blanket (already wearing a sweater) or turn the heat on.

Gas bills are only $30-50 year round (gas heating too). Electricity bill is right about $170 year round.

really? I have some cheaper electricity from hydropower... but it is still expensive compared to natural gas.

Plano, TX... 90 degree nights... It was honestly hotter then Taiwan (a large, sub-tropical island)!
