So I needed to make a WinPE disk with imagex and gimagex on it.

I ended up doing a whole bunch of searches as well as having to use multiple sources to find out how to make a simple WinPE disk.

Even Microsoft's tutorial page had a step left out as well as not being very clear on some of the steps that are there.

Do they do this sort of thing on purpose to make sure it is exceptionally difficult to do what should be a simple task?

Reboot is a decent site with tons of info related to WinPE and creating your own discs based on it. WinBuilder is based/developed from that site, probably the easiest tool you'll find for creating those discs with the least amount of muss and fuss.

Bart's Page is another good resource, as is MSFN.org too.

And, as always, Protip: Use virtual machines and ISOs for testing, and use CD-RW/DVD+RW for making the actual discs while testing. No sense wasting a lot of blank media for no good reason... ;)

, and time. Aren't VMs great? Setting up MDT 2010 may prove to be a little tedious without reading a couple of blogs to find out about script updates that affect how the software works (accessing shares can be problematic) but making a WinPE disc using the AIK and command line was pretty straight forward.
