This got me excited. Wing Commander was awesome in a can. And I see EA is releasing a new game based on Wing Commander. Super! One more positive for the 360! Except I forgot that EA is ultimately EA.

Great. Thanks.. No I mean it. Take every single fucking thing that made Wing Commander a classic and throw it away.

Buy me a ticket on the disappointment train!

WCII with the Speech Pak was the first computer game I played in 1994 on my packard bell 486/25. I loved it.

what a let down.

I was just talking to a few gamer friends at how I'd love to have a new WC game with basically nothing changing but an update for the new hardware available. =/ I wish only ill on EA.

You can get fairly close to the WC/Privateer universe with a game called X3:Reunion. Patch it fully before playing - it's buggy as hell - and it's hard to learn because the commands are not intuitive, but it's a LOT like Privateer, only much bigger. The sheer size of the galaxy is astonishing, and the way they've done the graphics is very good. You can actually fly in and around space stations, and the closer you get the more details become visible. The sense of scale is VERY well executed.

Yeah, admittedly it's certainly not without its faults, but it's also the first game I've played in years that I didn't beat in 8 hours or so. And since you can get it for around 6 bucks from Amazon, it's not really that big a deal.

Another option is the opensource privateer game they made - updated graphics, same gameplay. The copy I had was very buggy - you couldn't get past a certain part in the story line - but maybe they've fixed it.

every time EA makes a game, a several thousand gamers somewhere loose their souls

that is a seriously sick effing joke putting the wing commander name on an Asteroids rip-off

Its quality depends largely on its platform. I LOVED WC, and for a computer or console, this would be garbage. But if this is a cell phone game, then it looks great! Id love WC Asteroids on my cell phone.

All relative my friends.

Re: X3, X3 = Garbage. Granted, I haven tried playing it in some 2 odd years, so mebbe the patches patched it up, but after X2 I was so disappointed in the soulless game X3 was I completely gave up on it.
The X series is not a replacement in anyway for WC.

I do wish they make a new Privateer or even a remake of WC1.

My fav thing about WC1 is that you it made you feel like you were actually part of a war. you could fail a mission or not complete all fo the objectives and the storyline sitll moved forward; I loved that aspect of it (thats also the aspect I hated about Xwing; you fail mission you redo it over and over and over until you get it right...war is about ups and downs not about a nonstop stomping...usually).

You could lose wingmen and then you would ahve fewer buddies for future missions; if you kep t them alive, they helped you out.

Ahhh, WC how I miss you. Someone should hunt down Chris Roberts and talk him into doing a new WC; last I heard he was wokring primarily in the film indsutry.

yeah, the patches patched it up, and they added a bunch to the storyline including a completely seperate storyline with a bunch of missions.

I think ya'll need to relax, that looks like it could be an XBL game.

It is a game for Live Arcade. That isn't quite the point.

This like them saying "We are releasing Resident Evil for X-Box Arcade. Except it will be a first person shooter. And we are replacing the Zombies with ducks. And it will take place on a moon base."

That's a japanese game called Super Quack Moon Joy. Not Resident Evil

:D

HEHE, well if Chris Roberts is working in the film industry I certainly hope its not directing. That Wing Commander movie was a fucking train wreck! I mean Freddie Prize Jr! Man that movie sucked ass. ;) But, yeah that would be keen if he did another WC game but I believe EA owns all the IP on Orgins stuff.

So, its out now...what do people think? I like it, particularly for its pick and and play xbla style. Certainly not traditional wing commander, but that really doesn't bother me too much. Its not like they butchered the license, they just kinda didn't use it too much.

EA took the greatest space combat franchise ever made and turned it into Asteroids, I could cry.

This game looks at least 100x worse than the WC Movie.

Awesome, thanks guys. Those were some really useful comments on the gameplay mechanics. Its clear you both have spent a decent amount of time playing the game. If you have nothing useful to say, please stick to the "omg nintendo wii sales" threads. Thanks.

I messed around with the demo for a little bit offline. It supports 16 players online so I can see that that has the possibility of being pretty fun. I was able to pick from two ships: one speed oriented with less guns; the other more weapon heavy but slower. I only spent 10 minutes with the game, but it didn't seem like you could strafe. The directional keypad makes you roll either right, left, upside down, or downside up. I tried to adjust the aiming cursor so that it would go up/down, but I couldn't get that to do so. Maybe it's more realistic as to what a real plane can do in space, but I was hoping more for the movement freedom of a game I used to play over 10 years ago, descent 1 and 2.
