Hey guys, I'm interested in taping the superbowl tommorow on my computer using my winfast tv tuner. However, I have tried taping video off of this before, and with the default settings even 30 min of video can take a gigabyte of space.

Do you guys know the proper encoding options to reduce filesize while maintaining quality?

an hour and a half of a DVD is 3.5GB for me roughly. Your not too high up there. You can always re-encode to DivX or something.

i can encode directly to divx with my 2000xp. you just need to make a new recording profile, or whatever it's called.

Yupyup... exactly. Me likes xvid w/mp3...

im not concerned with the size of the file,, so what would be the best format to record for the best quality

if file size isn't important, then mpeg is better than divx or anything, wav vs mp3. divx is ideal for storing acceptable quality video in an acceptably sized file.

Tim: What settings do you use for the DivX codec? I'd like to give it a try....

just so we're on the same page,
in the config thingy of winfast pvr,
the button with the wrench on it,
on capture settings,
the farthest tab on the left,
the capture profile setting button.
click add, name it like divx or whatever.

i have divx 5.0.3 but i'm sure it doesn't really matter.
it's set for 640x480,
and in the configuration button under codec select,
i have (in the leftmost tab, i didn't really mess with the other tabs)
variable bitrate mode: 1 pass,
encoding bitrate: 750 kbps.

for audio i have
mp3, 44.1 kHz, stereo, 96 kb/s.

a half hour is around 200-250 megabytes (of course it could go up if a channel is really fuzzy, i had a half hour nearing a gig recorded on a really fuzzy channel).
for reference, some things i recorded on tv and cut the commercials from (via virtualdub):
contact, 137 minutes, 853 megs
penn and teller get killed, 86 minutes, 540 megs
star wars iv, 120 minutes, 750 megs
(i personally recorded these, just so there's no confusion :))

i'm sure i could do some tweaking, but at the point when i set it up, i wanted to choose something that would be acceptably good looking and not be in the gigabyte range. i also wanted to be consistant across my recordings.

also, i have a p4 2.4c (ht enabled) oc'ed to 3.1 ish and winfast uses ~60% cpu. i'm not sure how fast a system one needs to be able to encode divx in realtime without a problem.

maybe this is just how it is, but every way i try to record never seems as clear as the original... any suggestions?

blah blah blah

...divx in realtime without a problem.

Thanks for the info - I will give it a try. I use Gordian Knot/Divx 5.05 for the DVDs, so I am familiar with the codec settings there, but the analog stuff I haven't messed with. From what I have read the VHS stuff will be a pain, but if I start out with the South Park stuff, I will at least get my feet wet.

Quick Q: If you record in DivX, can you encode it again to reduce the file size? Never tried it...

Thanks!

you should just be able to pop it in virtualdub and re-encode it as needed but ideally you should find a setting to encode directly when you record that will provide you with your desired file sizes (unless you say want to record a movie on tv and fit it to a cd which i would need to do if i wanted to say burn contact).

If you don't care about size... uncompressed of course :) But you may be surprised at how big it is!

I think it's about... a gig for like 3 minutes or somehting? *shrug*
