Has anyone ever tried windshield wiper fluid in their system (The antifreeze type) ?

it has - Deionized Water / Methanol / ethylene glycol

Wouldn't that work ? :confused:
 
I remember reading about a guy who did that in this forum and then his DDC-12v pump wouldn't start everytime....
 
methanol reacts corrosively with some metals.

if you decide to try it, then you need to proceed with caution.

i seem to remember one chem reaction using copper that resulted in an alchohol being converted into an aldehyde, and the copper getting oxidized pretty badly............but that was a long time ago

Asking for trouble big time by using pure windshield washer fluid. Performance will be worse than with water.

Actually, lots of people use windshield wiper fluid it their water cooling projects. Yes, the heat transfer qualities are worse than water, but you don't mind so much at -20 c. :D

If you want to get nice and cold, though (like -40) it's safer to go with methanol.

Of course, if you're not chillling the fluid, water is best. :cool:
 
for some reason this reminded me of a person who used their windershield wiper fluid interchangably with their engine coolant in their car, the reason? theyre both blue! :p

Heh, Heh. Isn't that like the pot calling the kettle black.. :D

Since I use Water Wetter and hate that sickly pink color it turns my liquid, I mix in a couple drops of Cyan and Yellow printer ink. Gives it a nice light bluish color. :cool:

But for all intesive purposes most people have Green Coolant.

I wouldn't try it personally, but if you are willing to have something go wrong that could screw you up :p then by all means go ahead. And then report your findings here, or in another thread so that we can all read them and comment.
 
I used isopropanol in small amounts a while back, didn't hurt anything in the system, but I was wondering about methanol and other alcohols, so thanks for the tip, DFI Daishi.

SVC.com has purple UV dye, I dunno what color it shows up as under normal light but it's on my wishlist. There's an auto coolant additive that's purple, can't remember which one right now. Some Zerex is purple, you'll know by the name if you see it.

Antifreeze is moving away from green in the past few years because it's gotten microbials that slow corrosion. Now they come in red, orange, pink, yellow, blue, and whatever else, according to which manufacturer uses which microbial recipe. It's supposed to be some fan-ridiculously-tastic technology and you can never, ever, ever mix one type with another or your car will explode and take the rest of the universe with it. Or something. Maybe the microbials will just not get along, I dunno. You're probably asking for lots of holes in your radiator if you try it.

I think it's so they can charge more for antifreeze and you have to buy this particular one for whichever car you have and it's only carried by dealer shops so you pay ten times what it's worth.

The purple Zerex is just purple because Zerex is all 1337 and stuff. Like how Water Wetter is red, it doesn't make a difference in cars because every kind of antifreeze that has ever existed and will ever hope to exist in the near future will look like ass ten minutes after you've started the car no matter how much you've flushed the cooling system.

That said, I run super-duper NASA-strength techno-advanced coolant additive known as "soap". I haven't had enough of a corrosion problem to care, but I do like to keep the little green fellas at bay, so anything that says "antibacterial" gets a shot at my cooling loop. Right now I'm running this totally illegal brew smuggled out of old Soviet Russia called "Pine-Sol". I'm told it was used in the top nuclear research labs for cleaning floors.
 
Keep it simple. :) A 10% mix of Zerex G05 and water is a proven good coolant solution.
