I have built my windows 64 bit system (venice 3000). But to my suprise there are a couple of my programs that don't run on it so far. ie virus scan....

Am I going to have a lot of problems running 32 bit apps on windows 64 bit? Was I misslead to believe most 32 bit apps would run normally on windows 64? Should I go back to normal xp? What is most people's experance?

Thanks

P.S. IE 64 loads pages really quick!@!

not running it yet (probably will in a month or so) but from what i hear, there are only a few apps here and their which simply will not run.... most will be fine.

this is what i hear.......

All regular 32 bit apps should work...
Problem with things like virusscanners and firewalls is that they often need lowlevel access and use kernelmode drivers for that.
These aren't compatible with 64-bit, so they won't work. You'll have to wait for a 64-bit release of such software (or look for alternatives that do have 64-bit support... I heard that some virusscanners already do).

hmm.... just wondering....

what about things like adware/malware scanners, like AdAware from Lavasoft? As far as i know, they just scan things like files and enviornment variables and registry, etc.

Is anyone running WinX64 and successfully running Adaware?

Only reason you should be running XP64 (at least yet) is if you need it to be able to run something. If you've just got a bunch of 32-bit apps then it's one big "I've got the latest" geek ego jerkoff.

Farcry makes a good excuse BTW.

i had win x64 installed for a bit
it sucked.....i could only boot if i had 2T timing on

IMLO its way too early to setup to win 64

Photoshop. :D

XP64 allows it to access more than 2GB of memory.

...not that I have more than 2GB of memory.... or even more than 1GB for that matter  :(

Too bad farcry offers no boost

Gives some quite good visual effects at no performance loss. They're goal wasnt to make it go from 80FPS average to 120FPS average lol.

It will not run anything that uses base 16bit code. Alot of programs now say what they are before you DL them. Windows X64 is essentially the same as Windows XP except for the simple fact that it wont support 16bit but will support 64 bit. It will treat 32bit as well or better then previous versions.

It is also a stand alone install, no version of windows can be upgraded. It will be the ONLY version of windows capable of jumping to longhorn on an upgrade basis. Yea i bought it, why? I was sick of having to contact MS to get my stupid windows update code reset, so the 150 for a full version of windows Pro with future proofing (also allowing me to toss quite a few discs) was worth it. Its basically going to be like SM3.0. It doesnt look too special off the bat, but once games start to seriously integrate support you'll want it. Its benefit extends far belong its increase memory access.

Apparently alot of people were simply looking for a FPS boost, but the best thing it allows for is graphic card 64-bit image quality support. Differences can clearly be seen here:

and thats at zero loss of performance. Good deal in my opionion.

The image quality itself depends on the graphics card alone. You could get the exact same quality with a 32-bit CPU.
The gain here is that 64-bit mode is slightly faster, so they chose to put that advantage to good use with slightly more detailed worlds and such.
If you'd had a slightly faster 32-bit CPU, you could do the same thing.
But at least there's a tangible gain from going 64-bit now... albeit an artificial one.

I have found the bigest problem is the usb driver for my printer. Is there no way to make older drivers for XP work for XP64?

Yea too bad they didn't include a way to make older XP drivers work for XP64.... I think thats a hugh killer. Most manfacturs aren't going to go back and make drivers for stuff they aren't producing anymore. That means 1/4 my hardware isn't going to work. Thats a pretty big hit. Back to XP I go, oh well.

thats not realy true
thay added a shitload of stuff to the game and it still runs the same
that makes me think if it wasnt there it would be a good bit faster
