Hi All,

I have an old Toshiba Satellite laptop which has only (maximum) 512Mb of RAM, 1GHz processor. It had Windows 2000 and was working ok.

There was problem and I had to format the HDD and installed XP and SP1, 2 and 3.
The laptop is, now, painfully slow. Example, if I double click the web browser it takes about 2mins to open. Its the same for skype. Even to open Control Panel or Windows explorer it takes ages.

I use this laptop only for skype, web browsing and to use MS-office (Word, Excel and Power Point).

Can anyone say what causing this problem? and any solution or suggestion for this?

Posted across several forums, also posted in the operating system forum.
 
XP SP2/3 runs a lot heavier than SP1/NoSP did... add an antivirus on top and 512MB just isn't cutting it anymore... also that box probably has a ridiculously slow hdd
 
It is the ram. 512mb is just simply not enough. 512mb on SP3 is like 256mb on SP1. Not much you can do outside of removing A/V or installing a lite version, and remove any unnecessary programs. Or just go back to Win2000.

Your onboard graphics card is stealing 10mb of ram. You can go into the BIOS and see if you can change it to 2mb or something smaller, doubt you will notice a difference in performance either way though.
 
If it's taking a long time to just launch the control panel - it's probably the HD is bad itself

Thats a good point. I didn't think about it. It has an ATA (16GB) hdd. Is there a way to check this hdd? whether it is working correctly with the spin speed (rpm) etc.?
 
I think looking at the task manager and seeing how much memory is utilized would be the first step.
 
It's slow because:

A. Old, Slow CPU
B. Only 512 MB of RAM
C. Slow HDD that may be faulty

Sure that computer would have ran XP great when it first came out but with all the updates and SPs, it's going to run like balls. 1 GB RAM IMO is the bare amount for an XP install now.
 
Memory and Hard Drive. If your Anti-Malware is scanning while you want to do something, forget it. Smart money is using the Laptop as an RDP terminal.
