Ok. I am considering upgrading to Vista and I am looking at Home Premium Edition but i tried Windows Xp Pro 64-bit edition and i worked great on my computer but i know there are a lot of driver issues with that version of Windows. What do you guys recommend?

I'd recommend a 64-bit version of Vista.
XP x64 is pretty much an orphan now. It exists, but it never was very popular, so I doubt it will ever get proper software support. Most 64-bit software developed now and in the future will be for Vista.
So I think the step from XP to XP x64 is not a very good investment. There isn't a lot of software for it, so the difference between XP and XP x64 is minimal. Vista will become the next standard Windows platform, and currently a dualboot of XP 32-bit and Vista x64 is the best of both worlds. Eventually you shouldn't need XP at all anymore.

You can either

1. Wait for Vista SP1 - most known bugs should be worked out.
2. Keep with XP - Tried and trusted - not for the brave people.
3. Go with Vista Home Premium 64bit - Getting better if you want to upgrade before SP1.

I would go for 1 or 3.

I don't see why you should wait for SP1 though.
SP1 is a free download anyway, and Vista itself won't drop in price. Microsoft's products never do. So, money is not an issue.
You might aswell buy now and install it already. If it works well enough, you can already use it now. If not, you can at least get used to Vista, and by the time SP1 comes out, you can just install it and you're done.
It's not like hardware, where prices constantly drop, and things constantly get outdated.
Vista is probably an investment that will last you for the next 4-5 years, just like XP has.

I think it boils down to if you want to make use of 4 gig or more of ram. If so go with Vista 64, otherwise wait for a while.

I probably will eventually make my way to 4 gigs of ram but was also considering get Windows XP Media Center Edition

Move to Vista 64... I am this week on my new PC that gets here this week!!!!

I've been running Vista 64 Ultimate for a couple weeks now. Last week I also installed Sp1. I love it. I was hesitant at first, but it runs faster and I haven't had a single problem with it. Driver support has come a long way. There's really no reason NOT to upgrade, unless you have an older machine. New rigs, like the one in my sig, run great.

actually there are a lot of reasons one could find why not to use vista, you just haven't done any research,

...You rebutted an unsupported claim with another unsupported claim.

In my opinion, if you want to use a Microsoft OS, there are not a whole lot of good reasons not to use Vista if this is a brand new built computer. New parts are very likely going to have Vista x64 drivers, and I doubt you will see any problems, but always do your homework regardless of what OS you install!

I used XP for 4 years, switched over to Vista when it came out because of beta experiences and have never looked back since.

Vista 64 Premium Home Edition comes with Windows Media Center. I've used it.

There are many threads about this in this forum, many ask what operating system they should use, many are ignorant and get defensive and could care less about the accurate advice given to them.

I highly recommend you upgrade to Vista, either 32 or 64, I would choose 64bit if you have a 64bit processor, everything released for Vista32 driver wise will work on Vista64. Answers alot of questions right? I figured.

Windows XP is still a good operating system, but it's a thing of the past, Vista brings a ton of features, it manages your system memory more efficiently, tracks your computer usage to optimize the programs you frequently used, overall better stability, long duration uptimes don't make your os feel like it's lagging it. I've had my Vista64 machine on for 2 weeks without a restart, it still feels snappy. Windows XP had this stability as far as long uptime durations, but I don't believe anyone who tells me their XP machine after 2 weeks feels as snappy as it did before they restarted. It's a fucking lie considering I've a couple machines with XP on it, all crunching numbers and all with long uptimes.

You are ignorant, you will more than likely not come back here to show claims of the aforementioned quote. You like to spread misinformation on the internet and therefor you do not contribute.

lolz, thats all i can say to you, obviously you know nothing about vista, because of your own ignorance, and u gonna call me ignorant? gtfo

It's pretty obvious that the statement in dispute "There's really no reason NOT to upgrade" is untrue, since to disprove it, it is only necessary to find one reason not to upgrade, which is quite trivial. For example, it's incompatible with hardware you own.

As for the original topic, if money and compatibility with your hardware isn't an issue, then I would go for Vista.

Been running Vista Home Premium 32bit for many months and no issues- but that's on current hardware. Would suggest that gamers start switching to 4GB of ram and 64bit right now though, as I've noticed a few slowdowns in the newest games, particularly the UT3 demo, with all of my other crap running as well. RAM is cheap, with 4GB of CAS 4 6400 (1GB sticks) going for $160 and less on the 'net, there's no reason not to, other than being poor. Feed yourself first.

Personally waiting for OCZ's kit to come back in stock at the 'Egg, then going to install my 64bit copy on a second HD and try the 'User Migration' feature. Will report back on that debacle when I get around to doing it...

As for the trolls, well, use Vista. There ARE things to cry about, but none of them are realistic (other than printer drivers from greedy printer makers) that I've seen. Yes it needs new hardware and drivers, but yes that's all available and yes it all works great.

You boys need to stop calling each other names.

I have Vista 64 on one HDD and my old faithful XP on another.
Vista has been great to me, but I'm still learning as well.
I have had some gaming issues with Vista 64, but I'm not sure exactly where the problem lies......the game, hardware-driver, OS or any combination.

I think unless your hardware holds you back, Vista is the way to go.

I run Vista64, you troll.

yeah, and? ..must have came preinstalled on your uber dell computer?

i've used vista, nothing to get excited about...now i use linux, because i value my rights, my freedoms, and my privacy (i don't expect you to know what those three weird words mean)

Vista x64 if your hardware supports it. People saying there are "a lot of issues" are usually wrong.

I'd back up even farther, and ask why even create a thread like this, knowing full well you will only see people arguing back and forth?

If you want an answer, here it is. Take a look at what both OSes have to offer. Now look at what you plan to use your computer for. Now take a look at what hardware and software you plan to use, and see if there are any compatibility issues. Since only you can answer these questions, only you can make the final decision. Those who stay back with XP are happy, and those who give Vista a full try are also happy.

If you go 64bit make sure your drivers are signed (whql) and you're gold :D

You people are really starting to piss me off. Time to replace the sticky again and start banning again for namecalling and general rudeness.
