Hey guys,

I tried to use a key gen and it screwed around with some of my windows files. I reinstalled windows, and i got back my icons on the desktop for my computer, my documents, etc. Also system restore was messed up but works again.

When I click start, the icons for "RUN" and "SEARCH" are missing though. Any idea how I can get those functioning again?

Well, this thread is on a fine line. Don't admit to using keygens, as a basic rule of thumb.
As for your situation, I don't know how to get them back, but if it effected your system in this way, I would work under the assumption that your system has already been compromised and try to see if you have any viruses, worms or trojans now.

I did a scan and it found a virus but its been fixed... also using adaware it fixed some registry items that were comprimised... besides that the other issues are stilll there. I just hope that i don't have to start all over again.

Right click on the taskbar and click on Properties - Start Menu tab - Customize - Advanced tab, and check Run command and Search.

EDIT: I read your post wrong. If you have a Windows XP CD, you should do a repair install, or find a shell32.dll download (could be dangerous).

I would probably still re-install, since you borked some major system files. Considering it was a virus, and your system is vulnerable to them, disable System Restore and leave it that way. I'm still surprised when I come across someone with it still enabled. It chews up hard drive space, rarely works, and gives certain virii places to hide. Just about every major AV software maker recommends leaving it disabled.

A simple solution might solve your problem. Search for Microsoft Hotfix Q319949. Download then run the executable. This solution restored my search function.
