I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro video card/Windows XP Home/and my monitor refresh rate is set to 85 hertz...I heard that when playing PC games using Windows XP the refresh rate automatically changes to 60 hz no matter what refresh rate you have your Monitor set for...In my video card properties diaglog box, under the "Displays" Tab and "Monitor Properties" there is a drop down box labeled "Refresh Rate Override"..the default setting for this is "Disabled"...is this a solution to fix the dreaded 60 hz refresh rate bug in Windows XP??...by setting it to "Same as Desktop" or choosing 85 hz from the drop down menu will this allow me to play games in 85 hz??...what is this "Refresh Rate Override" setting used for???...and has ATI found a solution to the XP refresh rate problem?

*I've had this ATI card for over 1.5 years and have never known about this "Refresh Rate Override" feature before...I did a search online and am hearing conflicting answers about this feature.

*greetings and hello to everyone on this forum, since this is my first post :)

Yes, that will fix it. Choose "same as desktop". I honestly videocard manufacturers have to fix the mess that Microsoft made, I mean this is, IMO, a very serious bug, yet Microsoft hasn't attempted to fix it. They've has 3 years!

if that is the simple way of fixing the refresh rate problem then why are there still so many separate programs out there that do this, such as MultiRes??....it seems pretty simple to just change a video card option...ATI needs to promote this feature more, I've had my VC for over a year now and have never known about this feature...plus they hide it away deep in the bowels of the displays/monitor tab so that most people won't even know it is there...they should at least put it in the Advanced 3D section....

is this fix only for ATI users or does Nvidia have a similar fix?

It will be fixed in WGF1.0/Longhorn. :D

There are several solutions for this problems for both types of cards. ATI in particular has a ton of third-party programs (and even drivers) that have the fix, and for games run at the desktop resolution you can fix it simply with the card's regular CP. Personally I just use RivaTuner.

Here's a guide I wrote that might explain some other features you don't know about (and in fact refresh rate is very much related):

Really good post Maxx, i got this out of Omega drivers:

"In Windows 2k/XP, ALWAYS disable DDC in the ATI "Displays/Monitor" CP after
installing drivers to be able to use ALL the refresh rates and resolutions
your monitor supports, also this is the best way to avoid the 60Hz RR bug."
Hope it helps too.
Live long and prosper

Yep, disabling DDC can have some benefits. I was going down that avenue for my own monitor, as it's supposed to support a higher refresh rate at 1600x1200 (75 Hz v. 70 Hz). The irony of the situation is, the monitor natively also lets me select 2048x1536 (maximum is supposed to be 1920). But no matter how much wrangling I did, I couldn't get 75 Hz and 2048 works perfectly. Seems to actually be a spec misquote. But disabling DDC is primarily to get refresh rates your monitor can run that aren't otherwise selectable.
