I'm going to reinstall windows xp on a friends computer, as his OS is all messed up. The issue I have is that he doesn't have his XP disc, but I do have the windows key on the side of his PC. Anyone know of a place I can download Windows XP Home from. His PC would not support vista as it is roughly 4 years old and the hardware would be to slow.

He'll need to request the XP CD media from the company name listed on the sticker, or the brand of the computer itself, and there will most likely be a cost involved for the media + shipping and handling.

There are no legitimate places you can just download any version of Windows for free (MSDN and Technet subscriptions cost money and that software is only meant for developer/development purposes) - anyone that recommends any service or website or torrent tracker is basically telling you to commit software piracy, regardless of how they will try to rationalize it.

I agree with you in respect of downloading from torrents or other non-Microsoft locations can be dicey and you don't really know what you're getting.

However, downloading the disc ISO alone is NOT piracy. Microsoft has been very clear that they don't care at all about the physical media. What they care about is the license.

If you download the disc and install using a bogus registration key, then THAT is piracy because you are not the person to whom that registration ID was originally assigned.

However, if you install using the registration ID that is attached to your PC, you have not violated the license from Microsoft.

Again, I wouldn't download an ISO simply because you have no idea what kind of malware may be embedded in it. But, it's not a violation of the EULA to do so.

Bullshit, if you own the media you can download it all you want, legally no matter what method you use. The methods themselves are 100% legal its generally whats downloaded through them that is not.

For example if i own a cd and dont want or know how to rip it myself i can download ripped copies of it all i want as i own it. as long as i dont share it i have broken no laws whatsoever.

To be fair, the rules for music and software are different.

That being said, I'd prefer to get real media from an official channel, such as the computer's manufacturer. If your friend has to pay a small fee for it, that will help him to remember to keep those CDs in a safe place from now on. You also won't be able to use just any XP Home disc...it will need to be an OEM disc.

Download via bitorrent, I use this one right now and it works perfectly. My laptop came with a Windows installation inside the hard drive and it broke, so i had to replace the HD and used this copy with the key in the sticker. The torrent can be found here:

If you already own a license for the software, I see no legal or moral issue with getting install media off the web. The physical media is really worthless plastic, the license is what really counts in software.

The problem with getting media images though unofficial channels though is you have no idea what someone upstream from you might have slipped in to the installer package. You can use hashes to get around that but you have to have a trusted source for the hash and I'm not sure the TechNet or MSDN hashes will be the same as a regular install image would be.

The legality is somewhat ambiguous. Technically the violation would be on the sharers end not the downloader - since the EULA strictly prohibits unauthorized duplication for use other than personal backup. So you ARE taking part in a license violation, however you aren't violating YOUR license by doing so.
