Windows XP on netbook freezes about 1-2 seconds after i move the mouse after boot

i have an acer netbook that i love and it has windows xp. when i start up in normal mode it boots to the desktop and i hear the windows startup sound but it comes out all stuttery and crackling. once it finishes loading ill move the mouse about an inch or two on the screen and the computer immediately freezes. no control alt delete no nothing. tried it in safe mode, i can move the mouse for about a second or two and then it freezes as well. thoughts?

*very weird, i was able to get into safe mode under administrator once for about 10 minutes before it froze. now, when i get to the login i can move the mouse for about a second or two before the entire machine freezes
