Windows XP Networking Problem

I'm trying to connect a Windows 98 computer and a Windows XP computer so that they can do file sharing. I have files on the Windows XP machine that I want to be shared but the Windows 98 machine can't connect to it. Both of them are in the same workgroup and the 98 machine can see the XP machine under network neighborhood but it can't connect to it. So I tried to ping the XP machine from the 98 computer and it wouldn't work. However, I can ping the 98 machine from the XP machine.

Why is this happening? Is there some way to disable ICMP requests in XP? I don't remember doing anything like this and my firewall isn't enabled so i'm not sure what the problem is. BTW, my XP version is Professional. Can someone suggest some ideas on what to do to get this working? Thanks.

i should probably add that the 98 computer can ping the gateway and outside computers fine.

Sounds like a diffucult problem to sort out. Start with the basics. The symptoms you stated point to a problem with the XP box (maybe). Start out by checking the CAT5 cable. Try replacing it with a known good one.

It sounds exactly like a firewall IS turned on. Are you sure its not on (possibly by default).

Firewall

Control Panel - Network Connections - Right click on your connection and goto Properties - Go to the advanced tab

Make sure the firewall is off.

Next Suggestion Simple File Sharing

Open any folder : Tools - Folder Options - View - Use Simple File Sharing

J: the cable is plugged in because i can ping the 98 box from the XP box

hulk: they're connected to each other through a switch and the switch is connected to my router

Dire: firewall is off. i'm not using simple file sharing but I have given proper access rights to the files that i'm trying to share. besides, thats not the problem. i can't even get to the point where i receive an error that says i don't have the access rights. none of the computers on my network can ping my XP computer. none of the computers can resolve my XP machine's windows computer name. it must be something else.

to make things even more wierd. i just tried creating a shared folder on my 98 box and the XP box can access that shared folder perfectly. it just won't work vice versa.

When you are trying to connect to/ping the machine, are you using the computer name or IP address?

Try to ping/connect to the IP address, and let us know if that works?

Turn off that static IP, that very well could fix it, or at least eliminate it as a possibility.

why do you think a static ip would be the problem? but nope, it doesn't work with a dynamic ip either.
