Windows XP keeps freezing on bootup!

My buddy's computer is driving me crazy! It would randomly freeze at the Windows XP splash screen and I can't even press CTRL + ALT + DEL to reset it. Once it freezes once, it won't boot again for a number of tries. It will work in Safe Mode though. Sometimes, letting it sit for a few hours will work but it's just random.

I've done a full reinstall and even got a new hard drive (he needed one anyway) and still the problem persists.

Hardware:

Intel E4300 @ stock
AsRock 4CoreDual-VSTA
1 x Crucial Rendition 1GB PC5300
WD 160GB SATA
LG 16x DVD Writer
Gigabyte X800Pro AGP
Enermax EG365P-VE

While I realize the PSU is old, I'm pretty sure the PSU is enough for this system. I've installed Windows XP w/ SP2, the latest mobo BIOS (2.30), VIA Hyperion Pro 5.10, Realtek R1.47 sound driver, .Net Framework 2, ATi Cat 8.4, and DirectX 9c.

I though it was stable so I tried to install Norton Ghost 14. It froze while rebooting... Time for another reinstall...

Any other ideas?

So far, I've put in an Enermax EG465P-VE I had around and still the same thing. Froze on the splash screen again...

Test your ram with memtest86+ or up your vdimm a bit. If your ram are ok. Boot with winxp cd and do a repair install.

Already did memtest86 and I've also done 3 fresh installs of XP. It's driving me nuts!

Sounds like something is overheating....I have seen countless instances of a overheating vid card causing hard drive lock ups. Just throwing that out there if you are not thinking it is a failing drive, ram or PSU.

Never really thought about an overheating video card especially since it happens on boot up. I guess I'll throw in my X1950Pro AGP and test it out or something. Maybe take off the video card's HSF and clean it. Thanks for the idea.

Uninstall current videocard drivers and reboot several times the computer and see if it still hangs on boot.

If it doesnt freeze again, try an older driver release for the videocard, like 6.12 and see if that fixes the problem

Thanks for the tip! I uninstalled all the ATi drivers and CCC, then ran Driver Cleaner and it seems to work. I was able to boot up 4 times successfully just now.

Now, I have to figure out if it's just a driver issue (it happened with some of the 7.xx drivers too) or is the video card on it's way out...

Load the card up with heavy graphics and watch for artifacts...if you happen to have an infared heat gun available it is very handy to find the hot/problematic stuff.

I ended up just leaving my Enermax EG465P-VE in and added in my old X1950 Pro 512MB AGP for my buddy. Works fine now so I can only assume the X800 Pro was the issue. Strange since once it boots up, he can game for hours and leave the computer on for days without issue.

Thanks for everyone here for the input!
