Windows XP Installation Problems

I wasn't sure if this should go in operating systems or general hardware, but I'm convinced this has to be a hardware problem.

Whenever I try to install windows xp, my computer crashes once I get to the "setup is starting windows" screen. It will go through a bunch of messages at the bottom of the screen in the gray box, but once it says "setup is starting windows" it shows that screen for about 2 seconds, goes black for about 2 seconds, shows the screen again for a bout 2 seconds, and then shuts down.

It can't be my windows CD, since i've tried installing both my copy of windows XP home along with my dad's copy of windows xp home.

My RAM works fine, since it wont boot unless it is in. It can't be my hard drive, since I never get to the select hard drive screen.

There's no way my processor doesn't work, since I've used it in a different computer for 11 months before moving it over to a different computer.

The only thing I can think of is, could overheating of my processor cause this problem? My processor temperature is reading 118 degrees Celsius. I'm willing to bet that's a little hot. Am I supposed to take that plastic thing off of the bottom of my heat sink and put new thermal paste in it? Is that what I'm doing wrong?

Here are my parts, just in case:

ECS RS482-M (1.0A) Socket 939 ATI Radeon XPRESS 200 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard

CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) System Memory Model VS512MB400

SAMSUNG Black 1.44MB 3.5" Internal Floppy Drive Windows 98SE/ ME/ 2000/ XP

Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JD 80GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

LITE-ON 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black ATAPI/E-IDE Model SHW-160P6S-04

Rosewill R804BK Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 300W with 24 pin connector Power Supply

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 2.2GHz 1MB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor

Thanks for all your help!

uh... 118c?

thats really really really hot.

thermal protect should kick in at fuckin 70.

i'd say, reinstall the the processor, run memtest, and check procossor vcoreand increase if at correct voltage.

Its a joke right?

Hell yeah, put some thermal paste in there ASAP, hope you didnt fry that chip

118C is way too high. You just need some thermal paste between the heatsink and the processor...nothing else.

If you're talking about the thing layer of plastic material they put on the bottom of the heatsink to protect it in shipping, then CHRIST YES TAKE IT OFF.

There is a lot of false logic in what you said. Not one thing you said about the RAM, HDD, or CPU tells you (or anyone) that the hardware is in perfect working order. I will admit though that it sounds like a simple overheating problem. Do what the others have said.

Just remember to do either of the following when applying the thermal paste:

1. Thin layer of thermal paste on CPU
OR
2. Rice-size drop then attach HSF. The HSF will spread the thermal paste when attached.:)

Hahaha, oh jesus I feel like a real idiot now. I've been using this plastic thingy on the bottom of my heatsink for like 11 months.

Also, there's no way it's really at 118 C, my temperature meter thingy must be off.

No wonder my heatsinks were always really hard to get on...

Funny, no where in my manual for my processor does it say to remove the plastic thing. I guess they just didn't figure anyone would try to do that.
