Windows XP Goes to NoSimpleStartMenu

Hey,

At work, my windows XP machine (which I have full admin rights over, despite it being on an internal network), keeps having the registry value "NoSimpleStartMenu" go to 1 (or true) seemingly randomly, leaving me with the "classic" start menu, taking away the regular one.

I just go into the regedit, change the value to 0 (false), re-login, and I get the regular start menu back..but eventually, it'll just default back to 1 again.

Now, it's DEFINITELY NOT in any form of an IT policy regarding this computer, it doesn't happen to ANYBODY else on the network. Anybody have any ideas what's causing this random flipping to true?

Thanks in advance.

Disclaimer: I'm on Windows 7, so I'm sure it'll be different for you. I thought I'd throw this out here for you to check out.

Go to Start, then Run, then type gpedit.msc
Under User Configuration expand Administrative Template, then Start Menu and Taskbar.

Check and see if there's anything in there that lets you set your Start Menu type.

If you do indeed have admin rights on your laptop, this would override the domain group policy that may be resetting your Start Menu type. I know you said there's no domain policy set up for this, but it wouldn't hurt to try anyways.

I do not know if there are Start Menu type selections in group policy by the way. As I said, I'm on Windows 7 and it's not in my gpedit, but it might be on yours.

Curious how you ruled out that it wasn't a policy? It sounds like someone, somewhere set a policy for this registry setting and applied it to your PC somehow. Being an administrator doesn't make you exempt from group policy...

In XP Pro I have an option at gpedit.msc > User Configuration \ Administrative Templates \ Start Menu and Taskbar
called "Force classic Start Menu"
You may want to check to see if this is enabled.

Yup, there's an option in there called "Force Classic Start Menu" - it was enabled. I disabled it, guess I'll see if that does it. I would have thought a change in the registry did the same thing.

I think I used the term a lot more loosely than you are. I didn't mean it in any full technical IT sense, just simply that there's no network profiles, etc. Local profile storage, full administrator rights, etc. I'm sure there's something that can be pushed from a "head" system someplace, and the computer is indeed on an internal network, but as I said, nobody else was having this issue at all, so it wasn't something that was "default" on all the computers by the IT admins, y'kno? Also, when I changed it in the registry, it wouldn't always go back right away, it'd be some arbitrary time frame, then I'd boot up, click my start menu, and it'd be in classic mode again, and I'd have to jump into the registry again. Hopefully what the above person mentioned did the trick, but realistically only time will tell.

Yup, did, it was, I disabled it.
