Windows XP Boot Time? (Compare your boot times here)

I have been trying to trouble shoot a slow booting Windows XP Pro machine. It currently takes around 145 seconds to fully boot up. Before I started it took over 200 seconds to boot up. While doing research I found a tool called BootLogXP (30 Day Trial) to see how long ever process takes and what takes the most time. I was wondering what kind of times everyone else gets on what systems and what processes are taking the longest?

I've gone to all sorts of tips sights and still haven't found anything that really knocks the boot time down. With increased energy costs I have gone to shutting down or going into hibernate but these boot times are a real drag.

Here are my general system specs:

Dell 9100
Pentium D 820
1 Gig Ram
Windows XP Pro

And here is my BootXPLog report.
bootup.jpg

My Boot time log is posted below... 74 seconds from start until the Boot Log is generated.
One thing I notice is that my "smss.exe" loads in 0.295 sec, yours in 5.846 sec. And everything you load after that is slow. My guess is that some system driver or .DLL that is loaded in the first approximately 15 seconds before smss.exe starts to load is hosing your system. I also see two instances of "dumprep.exe" in your log. "Dumprep.exe" is the XP error reporting tool and should not be running at all (unless you have an error). I would go to Event Viewer and look to see what system or application errors are occuring at boot time.

Edit: That program is sort of bogus too.... The time at the top (74 seconds in my log) includes the time it takes to logon (select user and enter password) and for all apps that load after logon to complete. You still have issues though... as posted above.

Wow, thanks, made me remember that I needed to defragment my system and run BootVis. ^_^

Yeah, certainly some issues there. It does appear to be some DLL taking for evr to load. If it's a used system, a good guess would be some form of poorly written malware. You may want to try and download Prcoess Explorer from www.sysinternals.com and check out what DLL's are being loaded by your sets of svchost.exe.

Mine took just a hair over 30s to load wit the system in my sig.

Here is the log

Accounting for login time (how long it takes you to click your name and type your password) seems a little silly.

Here we go:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800 @ 3.00GHz
eVGA Geforce 7800 GTX
OCZ Platinum 2 x 1GB PC3200 2-3-2-5
74GB Raptor

The only error in my event log is "The Computer Browser service terminated with the following error: This operation returned because the timeout period expired. " This is because I disabled Windows Firewall, more information about it is found here. Other than that I don't have any other error messages.

Bootvis offers similar tracing capabilities. My Dell Inspiron 4150 laptop with the following specs:

Pentium 4-M (not Pentium-M) 1.7 GHz
1GB CAS2 PC2100 DDR RAM
Hitachi 80GB 7200 rpm laptop drive
Windows XP SP2

When I got done installing XP and the normal package of apps that I use on this laptop, I installed PerfectDisk 7 and ran a defrag pass using SmartPlacement, then opened and closed some of the apps I use to get some prefetch data on file. Used the laptop for about 2 days before deciding to let Bootvis do a trace.

I did 3 traces in a row and had an average boot time of 28.14 seconds. I then let Bootvis optimize the drive for boot time, then rebooted, ran Bootvis again and did 3 more traces. After this cycle, the final average boot time was 16.85 seconds. The fastest of the 3 is shown below:

Bootvis. There is no substitute. :)

If you care about fast boot times, that's still the tool of choice.

Yacko, just looking at that list of stuff that loads when your PC boots almost makes me physically ill. :( You might consider a complete clean reinstall of the OS at some point to trim the fat, basically. It just looks like you have entirely too much stuff loading at boot time. I keep my system pretty lean, nothing third party loads at boot time, not one single thing.

I'll bet when you finally boot to the Desktop you have 5 or more icons in the Tray other than the Volume icon and maybe 1 other showing for something that's a native part of Windows. A complete reinstall (although it can be a headache for some people) will definitely restore that PC to a much faster state of operation overall, including faster boot times.

Thanks for the tool! I analyzed my boot times and diagram and look at which dlls within a process was slowing me down, uninstalled acronis true image and disabled my 1394 controller in device manager (dont use it), and my time went from 80 seconds to under 40 seconds in addition to running bootvis! Thanks alot guys!

My computer's boot time is about 2m 'cause I have startup delayer and so TClockex or whatever comes up in one second, then winroll at one second..
[Estimates without the help of Startup Delayer indicating that many u see below utilize low Resources and cpu usage]:

TClockex -1
WInroll -1
Volume Mouse -1
Zonealarm -30s + or -
AVG -15 + or -
Spyware Guard- 2
StartKiller-1s
cookie wall -1
Clickoff -2
Process Tamer- 3
RAS monitor -2
Hotkey -5s
Outtasight -3
POPupWisdom -3
Fastdefrag2 -7
NinetalesIII (built from demo version of screenbabe am going to rebuild with better midi songs :) its a screenmate) -3
.....................
here are the Startup delayer config:

Volmouse(statup controlled by windows) - 000
AVG -025
Cllickoff -045
cookie wall -040
Fastdefrag2 -078
Hotkeys - 060
NineTalesII - 085
Outtasight - 065
Popup Wisdom - 070
Process Tamer - 050
Ras Monitor - 055
Spyware Guard - 035
Start Killer - 075
TClockex (Controlled by windows ) - 000
Zone Alarm or Zone Labs in Statup delayer - 007
..........................
See when ur comptuer starts up all the programs start up all at once requiring a bunch of processing power, after Each one loads it may hog the CPU and not let the other programs load in sequance very good..in startup delayer u can not only control which programs startup first but also when..

For example the above shows Zone Alarm at 007 or 7secs after winroll TClockex and Volumemouse starts up which will not work very well with start delayer So I must let them all hog the cpu at once since they are very quick at starting up then after 7secs after volume mouse starts up, is zonealarm now starting up with startup delayer (1st app).

(note: all times of each delay before another app is launched is totally configurable) so next comes AVG which then counts down from 25 while it is launching zone alarm is using up the CPU to start and has enought time in my eyes for cpu usage tho zonealarm doesn't show the icon until around the 3rd apps launcher and since the others are relatively quick to start up I set it to launch withing a 10s range between each other giving the cpu time to finish up some processes and use some it needs to and also giving the cpu a less heavy load.

Once that is done after my last item starts up which is NineTalesIII it starts up quickly and shows rare disk activity but is not a nuisance like when everything was starting up all at once and hogging the cpu usage making things a little bumpy..

Altho Startup Delayer can increase ur startup speed by some Seconds it really in my mind a sort of program to dislodge cpu heavy usage application that startup from hogging too much cpu power by giving it enought cpu before the next item to lunch and utilize the cpu whereas it going much smoother and no startup problems at all..

I give Startup Delayer a 4.9/5

:)
