I was about to buy windows XP home from newegg but what counts as "hardware". As most of you know you get a discount when buying with hardware. Does a fan count? Or something like a new HD or CPU. And while im at it, let me as you guys a question. Do you think this is a fair deal:
My roommate needs to upgrade his OS
Bestbuy Windows XP home is 200
newegg its 91
so he can go to best buy and buy it himself, but my pitch was let me get it from newegg, throw in a 120 WD HD for myself. He pays me 200 and I reformat, intall, etc blablabla....free HD Fair?

They list item's that you can buy to qualify for buying the Operating System, but if you are going to buy a Operating System, then go for Windows XP Professional, unless there is a HUGE price difference, Professional gives you a lot more control over how thing's are going, and gives you Adminstrator Option's and other's along those lines.

As for a new HDD, or something; yes, any piece of Hardware qualifies I do believe.

wait you say there is a list of hardware (which I cant find) then you say any piece of hardware will count. Im confused. I use Home and have no problems (I a power user I guess too, hes not) I dont care about remote desktop and the advanced networking features of Pro. Any other difference? Dont move this to software yet BBS please

You can buy anything, or if you look below they suggest thing's to buy, like a paperweight, or item's of that Nature, at least they did when I was looking at Operating System's..

In the TOS, buying OEM operating systems specifies that you must purchase the software with hardware, it will not be sold separately. They are just left handedly complying with the TOS. So buy something that you might need or want, thats all :)

Any hardware basically counts...Just get a fan or something...They only do that so they aren't breaking any laws or anything...

BTW...Why not just get XP Pro?

Regular ribbon floppy cables are your friend. I ordered one when I ordered my XP from Newegg
