Windows XP 64bit freezes on install

Hi

I just built a system with the following spec:

Pentium P4 64bit (3.2GHz)
Asus P5GD2
512 MB PC2 4200U memory
Samsung 80GB ATA hard disk
Pioneer DVD W RW +RW -R etc
Nvidia GeForce 6600 (256MB) PCI Express

OS: Windows XP Pro 64bit edition

Everything looked fine after I built and configured the BIOS. The hard drive is about 6 months old - new - unformated and unpartitoned.

When I boot with the Windows CD for the first time and all the drivers load into the memory, then when that's done, I get a blue screen of death.

Instead of seeing the screen that offers me tools to format, partition and install, this blue error message screen says:

A Problem has been detected and Windows has stopped to prevent damaging you computer...

It then says to try restarting it, and if you'vre already tried that, to check for viruses in the boot sector, and check the hard drives.

This is one of those problems I dread! One spends lots of money on parts and then this happens. Anyone advise me what to do?

Is the memory new and recommended compatible with that mainboard?

I wasn't sure about the memory so I asked in the shop and they said this was the kind I needed. It's just a load of numbers on the module - means not much to me.

Not like the old days when clock speed was the only issue.

Anyway, I just checked on ASUS website by looking at memory QVL. I couldn't find the exact same number. Mine is M378T6553C23-CD5, and the closest one I could find in Asus's compatibilty list was M378T6553BG0-CD5.

Do the numbers have to be exactly the same for the memory to be compatible?
