Windows won't start when changing CPU multiplier

I'm overclocking my X2 555 BE and when I change the cpu's multiplier in the BIOS from auto to any value the computer boots but doesn't go into windows. I've disabled AMD cool & quiet. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-M55S-S3 with the latest BIOS. The BIOS supports the processor but it downgraded the HT to 1 as the native support was for AM2 processors and not AM3. I don't really know what to do, I set the cpu voltage to its default like everything else and just changed the multiplier but something is blocking the change. Has anyone any information that can help me? Thanks.
 
Sounds like your motherboard doesn't have a pci lock on it.. therefore increasing the pci bus so your harddrive controller does not work correctly, thus causing it to not boot into windows. have you tried increasing the multiplier just one digit? will it boot then? how far are you trying to increase the multiplier?
also.. the cpu you have installed may not be fully compatible with this motherboard.
if you can, try it with a AM2 processor to see if you still encounter this issue. if not then you may need to upgrade your motherboard to use the 555 BE processor.
since the bios changed the cpu's HT to a lower setting than the cpu supports.. it does seem like that your mobo does not support the 555 BE processor fully.

I increased the multiplier in the BIOS. It was set to Auto and I changed it to 16, which is the stock speed. At 16 or 17 windows does not load. The CPU is on the list of supported processors only it downgrades the HT to 1. Since I don't know much of the effect it has I thought I'd asked. I don't have any other processor lying around so if this doesn't work I'll leave at that.
You pointed to the PCI, maybe I can just set the value from Auto to 100 for example and see what happens.
 
pci bus should be locked at 33 , i'm not talking about the pci-e bus here.
but the pci-e bus is normally 100. leaving it at auto could be allowing it to go past spec when your overclocking the cpu multiplier.. so yes.. set it to 100 instead of auto, and see if this corrects your issue.
it could be overclocking your memory when you do this also, check on that too.
the 555 be processor is at a mutiplier of 16 normally.
try setting the multiplier to auto, load windows and run CPU-Z (you can download this from www.cpuid.com) and see what it says the multiplier is set at.

There is no PCI setting only pci-e. I tried fixing numbers for the cpu clock and fsb as well as the pci-e and memory. After that I would have to set voltages for many parameters like the chipset PCI-e, DDR2 and the different HT links. I just can't boot to windows so I guess this is the end of this little story. Thanks for the help anyway.
 
I've been thinking about my oc and returned to my problem . It looks like the CPU multiplier is the issue here because I can change other parameters in the BIOS and still boot in windows. So I have to do the changes via the FSB and fix the PCI, AGP and Memory frequencies. So far I have the PCI at 33 (I can't change it anyway) and AGP at 100 which leaves the memory with a multiplier. This is the part I don't understand how to set the value. It ranges from Auto and then from 5 to 16. I use DDR2 PC5300 which should run at 333Mhz. What is the relation between the FSB frequency the memory frequency and the memory multiplier? I sure would like to understand the relation. Thanks again.
 
Just curious, have you tried a "live cd" like linux as a comparison? Or a memtest86+ iso?
 
I'm not sure what you mean but my system works fine. I'm just trying to oc the cpu and don't understand this problem.
