While setting up my g/f's acer laptop it was running windows vista for the first time. There was a screen that appeared to have different colored squares you could choose but she hit the next button and it would not let her go back. Was there a way to change the colors of the windwos boot, login, or shutdown area or something?

Not much info to go on, unfortunately. If you can perhaps give us a better description of what's happening we might be able to come up with something, but for me, I've never seen anything even remotely similar with over 1100 Vista installs so far.

It sounds like you changed away from the default of setting a backround image to just selecting to have a solid color as the background.

Right click on the desktop, select personalize, click desktop background.

Select "Solid Colors" in the location drop down.

You can change the color of Aero windows by doing: Right click on the desktop, select personalize, then selecting window color and appearance.

Of course, Start>Help and Support> then typing "change color" would get the same instructions.
