windows vista and my old linksys router

so i have a linksys WRT54G and my mom just bought a HP laptop to use for work and traveling. it has windows XP and a built in wireless lan card of some kind(not sure how to find out what kind). anyways, the wlan is turned on but it cant find my router, even when i'm in the same room with it. is there something i need to do to make my router vista compatable or something? thanks for any help.
 
Have you installed the latest drivers?
Do you have any other computers you can test the router on?
What model laptop?
 
the laptop is an HP pavilion tx1115nr. if i could figure out what kind of wireless card it had i would get the latest drivers but i'm not familiar at all with windows vista
