There's already talk about Windows vista's replacement Vienna to be released sometime in 2009.

Codename Vienna aka used to be black comb was in the works before Longhorn aka Vista but it was delayed quite a bit.

At $400 for Ultimate Retail, let's hope not. Besides, it will probably be more like the usual 5 yr wait, unless somethings really screwed up with the new code that only a new OS will fix.

wow, 2 year lifespan as the flagship OS??

I dont know why the hell everyone bitched about XP being on top for 5 years... it was an extremely robust OS, very stable, secure if you werent a fucking idiot, and was compatible with everything.... the flagship.... for 5 years....., why did ppl bitch abt it being so good for so long?

O wells.... MS has heard your cries, and now it will give us a new flagship every two years.... *yay*

very stable
I wouldn't take that far, it was more stable than anything before it but it was and is still prone to the entire system becoming unresponsive due to some app running wild and locking resources.
secure if you werent a fucking idiot
amen

O nos! I would like to see MS release a REALLY solid product every five years, not some half assed shit every two. They would have to include new fangled tech in each release to give people a reason to buy and we all know what happens with MS's new shit. It almost never works as well as it should for the first few months to a year until the SP comes out.

Well we screwed because they will probably force people to adopt the new O/S, hardware companies love this because they can unload their products faster, with the new Vista there is a lot of old printers that will need to be replaced since drivers were not released. Vista locks ppl with DX10 and some eye candy, the next O/S will probably include DX11 only in Vienna, SLI 2.0, even tougher DRM that will fine you every time it detects unauthorized programs.

They also said that Longhorn was going to be released in late 2004 early 2005. Look what happend, we also got a stripped down version of what Longhorn was supposed to be. Don't worry Vista will be around for awhile. I hope they release WinFS soon.

I am currently using Ultimate 64bit and it runs well, no complaints yet.

BWAAHHAAAHHHAAAAA!

Here we go! Yet another non-existent intrigue in the making.

Microsoft's longstanding and often stated aim is to release a new OS version every 3 years. Vista took nearly six years to appear after the initial release of XP. If Vienna shows up late 2009 that's nearly three years after Vista. The statement made by Fathi at the RSA conference, which is the basis for this current speculative hype over nothing, was simply that MS want to release new stuff at a better turnover. 3 years simply means "back on track again".

But anyways. Waffle on about nothing at all, people!

LOL

I can see it now, "Please enter your credit card number in the box above in order to continue setup.".....:D :D

In all likeliness, it will be just a remake of Vista. Just like Media Center is a remake of XP, and etc. I don't think it will be an "upgrade or die" application, and will probably be built on top of the Vista code.

2009? doesnt it make Vista a redundant OS afterall?

maybe Vista and ME make good brothers afterall. both are bloopers.

The same way XP was built on Win2k code. I hear ya.

Yep. Such is the evolution of any single program. MAYBE from Win 3.1 to 95 they completely started from the ground up, but since then, it would be just stupid to start from nothing and completely write an operating system.

yes because vista's current "drm problem" is keeping me from ripping my music and watching movies and vids right now.... i'm sure its gonna be sooooo much worse in the future...

it's really only 2.5 yrs for Vista after sp2. So viena will be 2 years later. Makes sense

Vista is supposed to be the last "big" OS upgrade for a long time to come. Vienna is likely just going to build on top of Vista and not require a major hardware/driver change like Vista did.

They also did say that the main reason Vista took so long is that they had to go back and redo so much in XP to help security.

No kidding! I did not pay $400 for an OS just to have it replaced 2 years later. That would be the last straw...

It makes sense. Last year, Steve Ballmer said that MS will release OS more frequent.

The reason why people bitch was because OSX had 'yearly' updates with cool features while XP did not.

So the whole "Vista copied, OSX" argument got started. I myself would like MS to give us free updates via service packs.

Vienna is a "whole new OS" in terms of UI and stuff. I dont know if i can handle a whole new UI.

Why cant Windows and Mac team up and make the best OS with the security of Mac's UNIX and the entertainment of Mac with Windows Compatible hardware and DirectX! WOW I'll pay $600 Dollars for an OS like that :D But to bad they only care bout making money and not about us

Because if MAC's OS went mainstream it would reveal all of its flaws?

Exactly. The only reason people see Windows as insecure and problematic is because the amount of people running it is far greater than any other OS. If we switched Mac OS and Windows today in every way, including on servers, Apple would be unable to keep up with the patching in any way shape or form because of all the holes that would arise in even one day of that. Plus they would probably try and figure out a way to make you pay for it.

Speaking of updates.... try installing Tiger FRESH and do some updates to it.... did it 6 MONTHS ago, and had to download over 400MB of stuff, before it said that the updates were complete....

I can see it now, "Please enter your credit card number in the box above in order to continue setup.".....:D :D

We may have to enter it several times and not just for a new OS. After all
there will upgrades to do, hardware to change and those DX27 games to buy.
You may want to open several credit card acoounts just to keep up....;)

If only the ad about "sticking it to the man" were true? Instead expect to be sticked
and resticked.

..and dang ATI doesn't have there DX10 cards out yet...maybe this one would be a stick,
stick if you know what i mean....:D

That would sour the great competition spirit that American enterprise has to offer!
As a dedicated MS user I PROTEST! :D

XP is just as bad...
