Windows Updates!! HELP PLEASE

Ok, i have 3 computer on my network, 1 is a desktop, 2 are laptops on a wireless router.

None of them can access Microsoft Updates!!

If you have any ideas please let me know. im not too sure if one of them or the router has a firewall that is blocking it.

IF u need it, the router is a linksys wrt54g setup with a sprint dsl PPPoe connection.

legit, or not legit, windows update should work (though I wouldn't know for certain ;) ) I had troubles doing the same thing, that pppoe crap is whats messing it up. I luckily had a DSL modem that acted like a cable modem, so I didn;t have to mess with pppoe. If you try messing with the router settings, you might be able to fix it. I'm sorry, I don't know exactly what to do, but I know it must be the router settings.
 
reboot the router, let it come up, reboot the PCs. Try again
If fails, check for an entry in your HOSTS file that overrides windowsupdate
if nothing is there, go to command prompt (DOS window) and type "nslookup windowsupdate.microsoft.com" and look for

If that shows up, you have a firewall issue, you need to investigate that with your network administrator.

If that doesnt show up, you have a DNS problem and you need to consult with your network administrator or internet provider.


Also, run a complete virus-scan on the PCs, some virii can block access to microsoft websites.
 
Ok, well i sorta am the net admin, becasue i set it up for my friend. Ya i think that sprints serivce is really bad, half the time it never even works, so the wireless router does it have a firewall built in?????
 
Also all three keys are legit, and that wouldnt be it, becasue if ur key wasnt valid, the update page would still come up, but say that you have a invalid key. but it just sits there for a while, and goes to a cant find page display. everything else downloads fine, and all, just these updates im worried about, lol, i may connect to aol, and see if it comes up with a dial up connection

at least that would keep them up to date!!
 
did you do the nslookup from the post above? If so, what were the results?
 
If you connect one of them directly to the DSL modem and establish the PPPoE connection directly from it, does Windows Update work then? If so, you have a router issue or a router configuration issue.
 
Nope, i have a feeling the router isnt the cause, becuase i hooked up the computer directly to the DSL modem, and it still wouldnt come up, im going to try that NSlookup thing, and see what happens, thanks you guys
 
Instead of us guessing at the problem, how about posting some screenshots or information on exactly what happens when you try to access windowsupdate?

Any error messages would also be helpful.
 
^Sorry buddy! It just comes up as Can't find webpage error. but every other site comes up?? i try to post up more shots and shit when i get a chance

OK i did the nslookup thing and it came up as non authoritive answer, so it finds it but wont display it. currently trying to run spysweeper and antivirus on all machines
 
ok well it just wont seem to work im going to try and call sprint, and linksys, and see what they say. any more ideas?? i really need to update them, i may just end up getting the service pack two disk sent to me, and then using it?????????? I odnt know what to do??
 
yes. spybot s&d, lavasoft adaware SE, and a good antivirus program. (use google)
once that's done, then try updating.

barring that, call your ISP.
don't call linksys, they have nothing to do with it IMHO.
 
well the only things found on spy sweeper are like random small cookies, but no real threats, nd thats only because the computers havent had any updates, still not working, im going to call sprint asap, but its hard becasue they arent even my computers, i know at one point that 1 of the laptops accessed it before i installed the router.


and also their internet completely stopped working, so i had to call sprint to set the modem up again.
and now it wont allow the computers to do it, i just really hope that sprint can help, thanks everyone and i will update you guys.
their dumbasses probably are blocking the ports, hahah
 
If you are getting a blank page on windows update, make sure u enable activex on the security settings :rolleyes: . after its done disable it

Good Call there, I have a lot of people ask me why their updates wont work, and i ask if acticex is enabled... :p
 
Ok where can i change the setting at? thanks i will try it as soon as possible
 
Try a different browser. Even though it will act messed up (since winupdate only supports IE), if you can get there you will know IE is the culprit.
 
first of all, IE is the only program that can access updates, if u use firefox or something its not supported.

also active X is enabled on all the computers??

i guess the PPPOe is the culprit??? ill have to call sprint about it

Go back and read again. I pointed out that Windows Update would be messed up, but you can at least see if you can get to the website. If you can, even though its not working you know that your IE is the problem and not something else like funky hosts file, whatever.
 
correct me if i'm wrong, but isnt PPPoE just an authentication protocol? therefore it cannot be a problem once ur connected to the internet.
