I have noticed lately that Windows Update just crashes Internet Explorer when it scans. Since IE is the only thing that can be used no other browsers can be used. I have a system at home I want to update but can't do it. Anyone have a fix for this to keep this 98 machine safe?

When it crashes what file does it reference> Most likely you can run SFC and restore that particular file and fix your problem.

Example - if you or a printer driver updates the SPOOLSS.DLL file to a version that does not belong to Win98 then it will crash at 66% (why does the print spooler even affect WU?). Restoring the original file allows WindowsUpdate to complete. This put me in a quandary because the SPOOLSS.DLL from WindowsME fixed a HP network printing problem that we had. I ended up just temporarily putting the original file and updating everything and then putting the newer one back.

I'm not sure which file it is but I think its some exception, I will have to check when I get home.
