Microsoft released a support document telling about the next update to Windows Update. The next release will enable more than 80 updates to be installed in a single instance. It also continues Microsoft’s controversial practice of updating the Windows Update client regardless of the user’s “Automatic Update” settings unless you turn patching all the way off.

The company continued that practice this summer and will again in the coming months; the current WU client will automatically download and install the new update independent of how the software's set to handle other patches and fixes.

It's about time they allowed for more than a few updates to be downloaded and installed at once. I have to update my pc 5 or so times every time I install a fresh copy of xp pro sp2 just to make sure it's updated. So I guess the new windows update will be called something different...it went from windowspdate -->Microsoftupdate -->???

Please send me the disc for the inconvenience of the 80 updates that your to lazy to do. I mean really where can i go so far in the future i wont have to reload and d\l all day while i could be pwning you all instead.is there a website that would let meh create a cd for for ALL the updates so when i format it takes 2 hrs not 4 .....

Microsoft Update is if you have more than one microsoft program that you would like to update at the same time; ie. Windows, Office, Silverlight, Zune, etc

nLite. Integrate the updates into your install cd, along with making the whole thing unattended. XP now installs in like 25 minutes without any input on my part, and its almost fully updated upon install, usually theres just a few miscellaneous ones that don't get integrated.

auto-update this patch even when a pc is set to not update? ...good way to piss off the piraters:D

Off topic - Anyone know what the update limit is on Vista SP1? I was just reinstalling windows, had 2 sets of 33 updates..

Can't you just disable Automatic Updates and Background Intelligent Transfer Service to keep the system from updating?

I hate how I turn off auto update yet it still updates. My OS is legit, just damn annoying when it updates out of nowhere.

Pretty much.

It doesnt, if you turn off automatic updates with the option "Never check for updates" then it will never auto-update. However if you have "download updates but let me choose", or "check for updates but let me choose", then it will still auto download the new updater.......the reason for this is so that in future it can continue to check for updates automatically.

I like to install an OS, update it completely then make a Ghost image of it once all my "base" apps are installed. In the event of a reinstall I simply Ghost the machine back to normal in a matter of minutes.

eh- by the time i ghost a fresh install and may actually want to use it, so much time has gone by that all the programs (including windows) that are on there are outdated anyway. thats why its nice with vista that basically the os install is a disc image that just gets dumped to the harddrive. it doesn't take that long to update, and you would be doing it anyways with a 1 year old ghost image anyway.. my trick is to have a small os drive, usually 80gb, and most programs get installed on other local drives. that way if i need to wipe and reformat there is only 80gb to possibly worry about. it save a lot of time backing things up.

and in any case, i leave auto updates fully on. i let it update whenever it wants. sometimes its not too cool to wake up to a machine that reset itself and it waiting for your password just so it can start torrents again, but whatever. i like knowing my system is as secure as it can be.

Why in the world don't you install SP3? Makes things so much faster.

But I do agree with some of these updates. You've got to install some updates just to see other updates. Granted this doesn't seem to be a problem in Vista as much though.
