It's taking on average 1:20 seconds for a cold boot before it shows the log in screen, and around the same amount of time or more for my computer to shut all the way down. This seems like a really long time, is there a way to improve this? Thanks.

Before buying new stuff you should try:
-removing useless files on the OS drive
-turning off/uninstalling useless services/programs that start with Windows
-using Mydefrag monthly system disk script once you've done all that.
(it's the best defragmenting program there is, really, and it's free, and it does make a huge difference)

For the record, my main rig boots in 28-30 secs (depending on whether the bios quick boot thing is ON/OFF) with XP 32 bit on a 7200rpm HDD. Shut down time is like 10-5 secs IIRC (I rarely check that but I check my boot time fairly often to make sure my Windows install isn't getting slower)

(Can't imagine how fast it would be on a SSD with my very personal tweaking but seeing how my PC is on 24/7 it's good enough anyway.)
