Windows SMP vs VMWARE (virtual linux + SMP)?

Since MPI in windows isn't performing nearly as well as MPI on unix based machines, I was curious if anyone ever tried a virtual machine of linux with an SMP client running in the virtual environment.

Would the performance loss of the virtual environment outweigh the performance gain of the linux MPI system?
 
I have Vmware and Suse 10.3 running on a XP host, It is more productive even with the WMware overhead.If my memory serves me correct the frame times were 2-3min less then the windows client. as for what that comes to in a PPd point of view I will leave that to the PPd experts,as i have no clue.

And that setup is quite common so there will be no end to the help you will find on these forums.

 
Here's at thread I made on just how to set this up.

I use the CentOS-5 distro in DVD form to set up all my VM's.
As long as I get the quick Linux SMP protiens then I'm 800-1000 PpD up on the Windoze SMP per Quad CPU.

i gained close to 300 PPD switching my A64 X2 from windows to linux, then switching it back to VMWare, i only lost a few PPD (negligible really)....most of the gains seem to be more from running through pure 64-bit code, rather than the available resources

 
Since the linux client came out first, most of us started out running linux in a vm so we could get some SMP lovin' on our windows boxen. It runs within just a few precentage points of straight up linux.

Im getting about the same result.....300ppd increase on my opty165 @ 2.7ghz running ubuntu instead of windows. Ill take the extra 10k/month for running linux.
