Just an FYI the Drop in Binary link on Stanfords website will download the new version 6.30.
This is a public soft-release, so the wording hasnt changed, but it is an updated binary.

The only difference is this binary does not require MPI. So it should make installation easier.

Zero82z time to update that guide ;)

Very Interesting.. I'll probably get around to it on a few systems. This should be as easy to install as the GPU or uni-processor client from what I gather. Thanks for the heads up.

Theres no install if you are already running SMP.
Just replace the .exe

I'm not going to replace the executable on existing installations just yet, but will try it on some systems where I'm intending to revert back to XP from Win 7. These will be new client installations.

Tried it on my main rig and I can confirm that MPI is not needed (I disabled the service before running the client and it works). I'm going to have to try installing the client on a Windows installation that never had the MPI service installed and then I'll be able to update the guide.

let us know how that goes, this will make it much easier to reach out to the masses if they package this in an easy interface like the GPU client

any speed ups?

k

how long until stanford updates the installer with the new exe? Its good to see they are still trying to improve on how easy their stuff is

I'm lost....so on a fresh install, 64bit os, you DL MPICH bundle + drop in EXE and then just dump in the new EXE and not worry about doing the MPI install.bat and user account password stuff anymore....? That the gist of it? Just wanted to verify.

Going to be doing some fresh installs in a few days, want to make sure beforehand. :)

Ok, so the only difference with version 6.30 is that it makes installation easier then? If so, i'll just leave things the way they are right now on my folding rig.

I believe so.

Yes, it will make no difference to performance.

why does it still say 6.29?
It's not well-worded. They mean that the drop-in binary is for the 6.29 client, but the actual version of the new binary is 6.30. If you download and use it you'll see that it says 6.30 when it starts up.

Just to update you guys and pass along my experience with this...
I did a reformat on one of my boxen and after going through a few threads at the FF I went ahead and decided to be a guinea pig myself and run drop-in client only.

Good lord it's ridiculously easy - I mean there's literally no setup whatsoever.
Make a directory, dump in the exe. Make your shortcut, add -configonly. Run it, allow the mpiexec firewall exception (assuming you're in XP, Vista, or 7). That's it. No admin passwords, no crazy stuff, nothing.

I do believe 7im when he says that if an a1 or a2 WU comes along, you will crash and burn because you would in that case need MPICH and you wouldn't have it installed, but the likelihood of that happening these days is pretty low I would say. I'm sure there are more than enough a3 WU's to keep the client busy.

I tried this drop-in earlier in the week and it still reported as 6.29. Not only that but the size of the file was identical and the client wouldn't work without the MPICH service running. I guess the file has been available only recently...?

You're a bit late to the party; I've been running with MPI disabled for a week and a half already ;). As for the setup, it is indeed easy, and it's all covered in my SMP setup guide.

Obviously A1 and A2 units will not work with this version, but I am taking its release to mean that A1 and A2 are now gone for good, or at least gone as far as Windows is concerned.

You must have downloaded the wrong file. Here is the correct link: http://www.stanford.edu/~kasson/folding/windows/Folding@home-Win32-x86.exe

trying the new 6.30 client ......... its only doing 172 points(HFM) oaisdfnoasdn WHY ???
Its only using 28% of the cpu which is a Q9400

You don't even need the MPICH installer anymore though. ;) I would just tell people to DL the drop in and make a folder and shortcut where they want to, especially since they're not going to run the install.bat for MPI anyway.
I would also take out -advmethods because the WUs have gotten too large for that. The only thing I'd run -advmethods on would be an X6 and that's only because you can't run -bigadv on it; everything else, I would only run -smp -verbosity 9.
(just my thoughts on it ;))

-advmethods doesn't really make a difference nowadays anyway. Removing the flag won't prevent you from getting larger A3 units like 6701/2 or 6040/1. As for the rest, I'll look into it.

I was kind of leery of trying the SMP clients because of how much of a pain it seemed to install (just, time.. ok I was being lazy).. This new client is a snap, there is no reason to every run the graphical client ever. This + FahMon are a breeze.

I am curious to people who are running multiple SMP clients? Is there a need to do this on a i7 920?

Also are there any significant advantages to the 64bit client?

well time to get rid of fahmon because its useless with the smp client.. doesnt calculate bonus points.. get HFM.net

I don't think I get bonus points?

I'm not doing -bigadv.. I had let one run for 30 minutes and it got nowhere..

Thanks.. I started using HFM.net; It's a pretty similar ap to FAHMon but looks a lot better.

yep.. just make sure you save your hfm config after adding the clients.. then go into the preferences and tell it to load that config on start up.. otherwise next time you start hfm you will have to re-add the clients again..

Also, make sure you have your passkey (you can request one from the Stanford web site) entered in the client config. Doing so will enable you to get the bonus.

That is normal for a -bigadv project, even the big boys with 4 cpu's on a server board take 15-25mins to do 1%, it has always been stated that i7's are marginal for -bigadv. The curretn 2685 project is doable but 2684 is a lot closer to the deadlines

Just to reiterate, this is ridiculously easy to set up now. Drop the executable into a folder, run it with the -configonly flag, then run it. I actually stole a client.cfg file from another machine, so I didn''t even need the -configonly step.

Running multiple clients is pointless and is even detrimental.

There is no 64-bit client for Windows.

As sirmonkey pointed out, all A3 units use the bonus points system. Make sure your client is set up with a passkey; if it isn't, there are instructions for getting one in the SMP setup guide I wrote which is stickied in this subforum.

You don't need to use the -configonly flag. The client will start in configuration mode if you run it when there is no client.cfg file present.

t.

Good to know about multiple clients being detrimental - I'm only pushing my GPU3 and SMP client, once I got the SMP I ditched the other installed one.

Is there an advantage to running a 64bit client say, on ubuntu?

I have a C2D machine with a 260 I could set up for folding..

I have my passkey set up, great guide. It was really simple, I just hadn't had the time recently to get it in order.

I'm steadily jumping up the ranks :D hehe

With Linux, you have to be running a 64-bit OS to use the SMP client in the first place.

If you don't need to use Linux, don't right now, especially if you plan on running the GPU client. You can do it, but it won't gain you anything. You are looking at SMP + GPU with that machine, and the GPU part is way harder to set up in Linux.

All things equal it seems that A3 runs better on windows anyway.
