It appears that Microsoft has taken notice of the Linux freight train, and is attempting to increase the functionality and abilities of their upcoming server offering.

One of these is the fact that Linux has less of a surface area, which led customers to believe that Linux is inherently more secure, Bill Laing, the general manager for Microsoft's Windows Server division, told eWEEK in an interview at its annual Windows Hardware Engineering conference here.

Doesn't look like anything new that they haven't shown before. Seems to be big talk on core which is a nice new option for them.

I like the branch office functionality and with core u will need some 20-50 less patches and updates, that is more or less money right in your pocket!
combine it with the new SMS and I think you will have a winner for large companies that have a de centralized infrastructure.

I installed the beta last week. It's amazing how stripped down you can run it. By default virtually nothing is installed, and if you want you don't even need a GUI.

I wish regular Vista was this modular.

Anyone manage to get their beta key for 2008 yet?

I keep getting 1053 error from the website :(

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/beta/lhs/default.mspx

I go here now and i get kicked to http://www.microsoft.com/en/us/default.aspx instead now...

At least before i could get to a "error in order" form page.

GRRR...

This happened last time i was with the vista demo.

Never mind beta testing their products... you beta test their website as well...

PS. I'm using IE to try to get the dl. Firefox is my usual browser.

:update: I just tried with firefox for giggles... and it let me back into the ordering page.... and then dumps me out at the very end with this...

Sorry, we were unable to retrive your product key(s) at this time. Please Try again later.
Error Code: 1046

Which is the same error i had in IE. (i got the number wrong earlier and couldnt get back on the page to check it)

Windows Server® 2008 Beta 3 Standard $0.00
Windows Server® 2008 Beta 3 Enterprise $0.00
Windows Server® 2008 Beta 3 Datacenter $0.00
Windows® Web Server 2008 Beta 3 $0.00 PICK THIS ONE
Windows Server® 2008 Beta 3 for Itanium-based Systems $0.00

According to http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=748800

Select Windows 2008 Beta 3, This is working. The other download option
doesn't work
.

So use that option. I got a generic email and am awaiting a product key.

However there is ecpksupp@microsoft.com email if you cant get a product key (Nice that you get this email link AFTER you get the generic email by using the Beta 3 link for Webserver.)

I've been playing around with the flavors on MSDN and I have to say this is quite a major upgrade in the server arena.

2003 server was barely different from 2000 at it's core though there were many nice things about it.

I'm also very interested in the next SBS 2008 based on server 2008 and exchange 12, all 64 bit SBS FTW

Yea I'm most interested in the SBS as that is what most of my clients run. Haven't seen anything official about it being 64 bit but since exchange 07 is I don't see why sbs would not be moved to it. Right now most of my sbs servers are running out of memory. Having the ability to go past 4 gigs is something I can't wait for.
