Windows - programs not responding

I have athlon 2800, 1 gig ram, 7200 rpm 80 gig hd, windows xp everything updated

In the last 2 weeks or so programs have just stopped responding when doing a task, especially internet explorer but winamp and just general windows also.

I am not sure what it could be but i have anti virus updated and running, run spybot every morning , have zone alarm, so i am not sure what it could be.

For instance, i went to the start menu and opened AOLIM and the start menu was disabled for 3 minutes (with the thinking cursor) and then finally it opened up.

Yep. I smell a hardware problem. It might be time to start testing components

weird i have been having almost the same problems, winamp refuses to start...well it hangs, but i use mozilla so i haven't had any problems with that either. if u click to open an mp3 does it hang too? my solution was to shutoff server, workstation, and computer browser in admin. services, which u need though if u want to share files over a network. try it and tell me if it works. could also be a stupid microsoft update as well. cause i'm stumped

then if you come up clean uninstall and reinstall Norton

well Id try this
do the online scans
if good
disconnect from the internet
reinstall both Norton and the Firewall
reconnect to the internet
dont choose automatic but do the rule based in Zone Alarm
youll be prompted for every ap and process that wants to connect
deny any you dont recognize, (but dont make a rule)
note them down so you can google what they are
(obviously dont deny IEXPLORER.EXE)

check your event log again

do u have norton antivirus in the taskbar with an x over the computer icon stating that it is unable to do real time testing? if so then u have a virus i got the same thing some how.
