ok.....just the other day....my computer started having this problem. with certain random programs i would run(or try to run) it would open what appears to be a DOS window for like a split second then it would go away. it seemed to spread to almost every program so I decided reformat the hard drive and do a clean install of windows(there was nothing important on the computer yet since i built it only like 2 weeks ago)
so it seemed to be working again...everything was going fine....i choose not to download a couple programs that i had before afriad that they were the source of the problem. but after only a few days....it did it again.....AOL and several other programs wouldnt open....they would try....but the same dos window would open then shut and the program would never run.
does anyone know what could cause this? right now my guess this portmagic that comes with AOL......aol always seems to be the first program to quit working...and if i recall correctly it gave an error message both times about some kind of file corruption within itself. Thanks for any help

The box that looks like a "dos" window is the command prompt. not actually a dos window.
As for your problem, I would try runnining scandisk with "automaticaly fix errors" checked. You will have to reboot. Then, if that don't work try uninstalling and then reinstalling AOL. (It hurt to say that, really hurt. I just advised someone to reinstall AOL. ). Also uninstall and then reinstall the other affected software if that don't work. Could be anything. hope it helps.
