Windows PPTP & Shared Folders Through Cisco VPN?

Hi, first of all sorry if this has been answered already... I tried a few searches but couldn't find a complete answer.

Basically, I have a desktop that I want to use as a sort of media server. This desktop is on a college network, which is split up into small LANs by location. From my desktop, I can see about 10 other machines on the "network."

If I'm on a machine somewhere else on campus that is also on the college network, I use the built-in Windows PPTP VPN to connect to my Desktop (192.168.3.1 as the gateway), after which I can browse the desktop's shared folders and stream media from it, like with \\192.168.3.1\music.

From outside the college network, I can connect to the college using a Cisco VPN client (192.168.2.1 as gateway). Once I do that, I can successfully connect to my desktop using Windows PPTP, but whenever I try to open a shared folder, I get a message saying the network resource is unavailable. I can, however, use Remote Desktop fine to connect to the desktop once I've logged onto the Cisco VPN, but I can't use that to stream videos.

So my question is, is there something else I have to do to be able to use Windows PPTP through a Cisco VPN connection in order to access my desktop's shared folders? Or am I going about this the wrong way, and is there a better solution to streaming media from my desktop to outside the college network?

Thanks

I'm not sure how the Cisco VPN will handle GRE through it. Interesting test...I've never tried that myself.

You might have better luck with a TCP/UDP based VPN on your PC instead of PPTP.

I've installed Hamachi, but I probably won't get a chance to test it this weekend.

Valnar, do you have any recommendations on free TCP/UDP VPN's?

Free? Not that I know of. Perhaps some variation of the OpenVPN product.

Would Hamachi be a good solution for streaming media? It using a 3rd party and all?

I've been using it for a few days now, and Hamachi seems to be working quite well for streaming media. My follow-up questions now are:

Are there any privacy risks in using Hamachi to stream media that aren't inherent to VPN in general? (I've heard Hamachi is quite secure, but don't know too much about it.)

Is there anything I can do to increase streaming quality? Something like using specific, high-priority ports maybe?
