I am sick of windows upgrades and security flaws. How good is Mac tower G5 or power book pro for internet access, photo's, videos mainly. I are too old for games and sick of windows problems.

kind regards.

I'm very happy with my MacBook Pro. I've got Windows installed on it so I can reboot and play a game if I ever happen to feel the urge.

Prior to this, I had a 1GHz G4 PowerBook. It was just ok, kinda slow if I tried to do more than a few things at the same time. I also had an Opteron 165 system with a 7600GT for games and stuff.

All in all, I feel that this MacBook Pro is a good middle ground since I don't game much anymore.

Sounds like you are the perfect candidate for a Mac. Does nothing but use the internet and watches pics and complain about windows security flaws when most likely have not even been affected by one

A older PowerBook would be great for internet surfing. You could use Safari or Firefox for surfing, iChat for AIM and just use the installed iPhoto for your pictures. You won't have to run antivirus or spyware. Give it a try.

Well, you are awfully helpful; give the guy a break.
He asks an honest question and you immediately bash him with "witty" sarcasm. Try posting something useful once in a while, neh? I see I've found yet another forum goer who comes into the mac sub-forum once a month to whine.

Anyway, to the original poster:
As of now, Mac's do seem like that have some sort of magical formula that protects them from viruses, but in truth it is mainly because hard core virus/exploit makers haven't strongly targeted the mac platform yet becuase less people use it.
Now, some may argue that OS X's roots in the unix operating system make it more robust protection and security-wise, and there may be some truth in that, but there is no "magic-bullet" that makes OS X impervious to viruses and spyware (as apple would like you to think.)
Now, don't get me wrong, I love apple and their products - I use them everyday in everything I do - an apple computer is my main computer. I definitely think if you want to get a computer for ease of use that at the current moment you dont need to scan for viruses every 30 minutes, then you should definietly get a mac. Also, if your looking to do some creative work, macs come with iLife, probably the best creativity suite any company has to offer.
Sometime in the future we may see viruses become common for OS X, but I think that apples control over the hardware that goes into their machines and the fact that security is a major selling point for their computers will keep them on top of the ball in that arena.

I would like to say "Thank you to hungryduck for advise on the windows/apple subject. I am not a newbie but Jonathans father that has been with windows since Dos and windows 3.1. Microsoft have still to get it right? When XP is finally solved they will move on to Vista and start again? I believe.

Thanks for all contributions.

W Mack.

I picked up a 12" Powerbook (1.5 Ghz, 1.25 Gigs ram), replaced the hard drive with a 100 gig 7200 RPM drive (had the Mac in for cosmetic case damage repair so why not....) back in November of last year. I love it. In fact, I am going to rid myself of the Windows rig in my sig and get a Mac Pro once OS Leopard and iLife 07 come out........ Hopefully by then there will be a refresh in CPU choices and all of the revision 1 bugs will be gone.

don't get me wrong if you want a mac get a mac, but if you don't feel like spending money, give linux a try or one of the bsd flavors. No spyware or viruses....but as an above poster mentioned for the same reasons as osx.
