At first, I've been trying to boot into my Windows XP partition and trying to solve that problem (as you can see here) but I found out that I couldn't even mount the partition.
I try mounting it and get the following:
Code:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda2,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so
Any variation of the mount command will not work. I've tried many different ways...
So I type in dmesg and get the following:
Code:

I've tried adding this to my fstab:
Code:
/dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1 ntfs noatime,defaults,users,ro,umask=0 0 0
and during Ubuntu boot up when it says it's mounting the filesystems, it gives me that "mount: wrong fs type" error. But when I go to Places --> Computer, I see a drive that says "31G Drive" which must mean that it detects the partition in some way, right? Is there any way I can access this thing?

What I want to do is copy some files from the Windows partition into my empty FAT32 partition or my mp3 player.

I've already posted on UbuntuForums.org and LinuxForums.org and so far nothing good...

well for one, the line in fstab is trying to mount the wrong partition?
try something like this
Code:
/dev/hda2 /mnt/point ntfs auto,noatime,users,umask=0000,gid=users,ro 0 0
umask=0000 is because the kernel will often override what you'd expect the mounted permissions to be, so this sets them the way we want
gid=users means that the group "users" owns the mount point
the equiv line from a command prompt to make sure it will work would be
Code:
sudo mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/point -o noatime,users,umask=0000,gid=users,ro
hopefully this is helpful, i'm not entirely familiar with how ubuntu treats this stuff but it can't be far off from default linux standards

i haven't read the entire ubuntu forum post, and like i said im not sure exactly how ubuntu is configured, but the following should work (cross the fingers  )

less /boot/grub/grub.conf (menu.lst on some distributions)

Gah, same error. There's absolutely no hope with this thing. :(
Thanks for the help, though. Of course, if you have anything else to suggest, I'll happily accept your replies. :)

reread that dmesg..i missed an important part
can you run fsck from within ubuntu on your windows partition?
fsck -r /dev/hda2
EDIT: the above shouldn't work, i don't think
another option
(does ubuntu come with linux-ntfs? if not, get the latest 1.11.2)
http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/man/ntfsfix.html
hopefully that will fix the boot sector. try booting into windows, which should then run chkdsk (if it boots)

EDIT2
try this before linux-ntfs
mount -t ntfs -o ro,errors=recover /dev/hda2 /mnt/point

Code:
root@ubuntu:/home/excentra # ntfsfix /dev/hda2

Mounting volume... FAILED
Attempting to correct errors... FAILED
Failed to startup volume: Invalid argument
Volume is corrupt. You should run chkdsk.root@ubuntu:/home/excentra #
...so I'm guessing it's corrupt? Crap. :(

How do I run chkdsk? Isn't that a Windows command?

It is, yes. Reboot to windows to run it.
BTW, could you try "file -s /dev/hda2", just to see if it thinks it's an NTFS partition?
(I'd be very suprised if not, but it's just a sanity check of sorts.)

Code:
root@ubuntu:/home/excentra # file -s /dev/hda2
/dev/hda2: x86 boot sector, code offset 0x48, OEM-ID "NTFS ", sectors/cluster 8, reserved sectors 0, Media descriptor 0xf8, heads 255, hidden sectors 32130, dos < 4.0 BootSector (0x80)
So I guess it does read it as NTFS.

lol, I can't boot into Windows. What got me into this whole ordeal is that I couldn't get GRUB to dual-boot with Windows and I got totally screwed. So what I wanted to do was mount the partition to back up some files (some files, most of which are my brothers.......).

Can I boot up my old Windows 98se CD in command-mode or whatever to order run chkdsk?

Edit: nevermind, just tried it. It doesn't know the command. I can't find my Windows XP Home CD either. Any ideas?

2000 would work, but '98 doesn't support NTFS.
You could, uhm ... stuff the disk in another computer with windows, and check it from there?
(Fixing NTFS isn't really a linux thing.)

So my friend forgot his CD and I'm stuck with it over the weekend.

Is there any place where I can download something to run chkdsk and is bootable from a CD? I didn't mention that the computer that I'm working on is a laptop, and it being a newer model doesn't have a floppy drive.

Edit: Good news is that I found my XP home CD. The really bad news is that I ran chkdsk and it said that "there appears to be an unrecoverable error on the disk" and it does nothing. :(
So I'm guessing there's absolutely no hope...? Is it possible to install Windows on my empty FAT32 partition and access the NTFS partition? Or am I keeping my hopes up too high? I'm kind of "iffy" about that because I've read that Windows doesn't like being on any other partition besides the first...
So basically, can I access my NTFS partition somehow? If yes, how?
