windows locking for no reason...

just started a couple days ago. the first time i turn it on there's no video. i power it off and back on and windows loads but semi freezes while loading the widgets and such (the mouse works but keyboard does not). i power it off again and the third time it works like a charm......except this morning. sixth time was a charm this morning :mad:

the only thing i've added was a pci-e front usb 3.0 which i took out and tried but it did the same thing. i also added avg recently but i doubt that would cause anything.

i've had this same system setup for the past 3 years and this is the first time i've had problems.

where should i start to troubleshoot?
 
test a different power supply, video card and ram.

Hopefully you have some spare parts lying around.
 
Also check System log in Event Viewer for disk errors. That can present as freezes and lockups.
