Best version of Messenger hands down. I love everything about this new version. The beta was great, RC2 is much better. They've really been listening to what people liked/disliked.
 
I'm sticking with 8.5. With Messenger Plus Live and Stuffplug, I get tabbed conversations and much better functionality.

Thanks for the link to A-Patch, though. Never hard of that before and I'm going to try it out!
