Hi, i have HP probook 4530s and i want to install clean win7 64bit pro to it. I have 64bit non oem install media disc. and my other dead dell laptop has win7 pro dell licence and i dont have use for it anymore in that computer and its disc is erased.
If i enter dell licence to HP computer with retail media disc will it work? and could it possible give me problems later on?

Since win7 version atleast matches, and licence is 64bit also
thx

If you do an offline installation and then call into MS, sometimes OEM licenses like your Dell's can transfer over to a new motherboard, but nominally they are matched to the motherboard they were first installed on.

Are we allowed to recommend trying this on this forum?

The license is tied to the systems motherboard the dell license will not work on your HP. You can call microsoft to double check before you try it. I had a similar sistuation and could not transfer my license.

things get even more complicated now, i got another win7 licence from dead hp dv7 laptop.
Its not in use and has sticker * Windows 7 Home Prem OA , HP*
so this should basically work?
Although problem is i only have Windows 7 pro install media disc lol, will this work with it anyway since its downgrade? IF i dont give licence key when it asks it first time, i had this situation with vista ultimate iso... could install all versions of vista below ultimate from list.

You have to assume that all Windows licenses tied to prebuilt machines like Dell and HP are essentially OEM (or System Builder) licenses. Historically, Microsoft ties those licenses to the motherboards they're first activated on -- and they're usually non-transferable.

Your best bet is to call Microsoft (again) and see if you can activate the license by phone.

As for the Windows 7 Pro installation disc, did you create it or receive it from a friend? There are a few tricks to create a "universal" Windows 7 disc that could install all of the versions, but you have to create it yourself. If you don't know, it's better to assume that it isn't a universal disc.

I have in the past bought broken dell latitude laptops just to use the Win7 Pro COA on other laptops. I've used a Dell Win7 Pro disc and I've downloaded stock disc from MS site online and used those Dell COA's on HP, Lenovo and Toshiba laptops. I've never run into an issue because I believe those codes have never been used, businesses use Enterprise images with KVM/VLM licenses. I believe MS does allow a certain number of re-activation's on a code but you would have to call them to verify.

tiraides i made universal win7 dvd with that win7 pro disc. installed home premium media with it and used HP oem win7 home prem licence, it didnt automatically accept it. had to call microsoft, although only this automated service and it was activated after that... I guess if nobady else uses it, this key never gets deactivated?

But i guess if i use example HP media install disc with dell coa licence that wouldnt work? my pro install media is retail without any manufactor bloatware.

I know this is a little off topic, but you could always do the free win10 upgrade then a clean install with win 10 iso as the activation gets tied to the machine.

hmm.. so upgrade to win10 isnt enough? How exactly can i do clean install after upgrade?
i thought you cant clean install win10 yet, only upgrade from vista/7/8 or 8.1

You can also just get win 10 installed and activated and do a refresh. I think it's essentially the same as a clean install and its zero work

i guess its some new feature ( refresh ) in win10 didnt know about.
Is installing to win10 good idea to about 5-8 years old laptops or just makes them slow?
win7 64bit is runnign alwyas smoothly in every laptop i own and
im not used to win10 os yet so dont know anything about it.

Anyway this thread can be closed cause i got it working thx everyone
