i'm running xp home.

somehow, windows installer got corrupted, and i need to replace it. searched everywhere here, but can't find anything.

i tried this link, then tried downloading the latest java, and it failed.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en

the error message says

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

i'm hoping for a relatively simple fix, as i don't really love doing reg editing or anything else, but any help is appreciated.

thanks,
zv

the issue was the result of ghosting my old HDD to a new one. the registry was still referencing the installer on the old drive.

i simply switched the drive letters in the registry, and voila!

the technet articles (links) listed in my previous post from MS's website were very helpful, for those that find this via search.
