This is my first time using an SATA optical drive and I've tried installing Windows three times. It acts like it's installing, does the reboot and then it says one of the files is missing and needs to be reinstalled.

I guess the question is, Do you think the hard drive is bad or are the Windows files actually failing to install because of the SATA optical drive?

The optical drive is on SATA1 and the hard drive is on IDE1

would try different sata ribbon and make sure connections are secure. lastly try an ide cd rom and see if that fixes the problem, might be bad drive after all.

Thanks for the suggestions, I tried your first and easiest one and changed the SATA ribbon. I only have two cheesy, flimsy ones from my old DFI NF4 Ultra but I switched them and Windows is installed and up and running.
