Windows hates Overclocking!!

Whenever I oc my 2400+ to 2600+ speeds, windows always gives me some error, whether on the blue screen of death or in a DOS mode. When i set it back to stock, no errors whatsoever. Im stumped, anyone else had this problem?
 
Have you fiddled with your ram timings in your bios? You might have to tone them down a bit.

Yeah, that was my second question. Sorry, its Fri. night and I'm wasted. as usual. What ram do you have?
 
Well, i think the problem may be that im using pc133 sdram, and its not liking it so much. Im gonna upgrade the ram soon and a diff mobo, so we'll see where that gets me. Thanks for the responses. :)

Don't even try to OC anymore until you upgrade to something reasonable (even anything DDR lol) =P
 
Yep, This 133 has gotta go, but it was just a temporary thing anyway till i could get some better ram. Thanks again.
 
BTW, Windows is not the only OS that hates overclocking (too far without the proper voltage, ram etc) Linux hates it too! lol... :D
 
Whoa, wait a second. How many boards that support a Tbred/Barton even use PC133? I thought starting from the Palomino, it was all DDR?

Unless of course you did what I did, i.e. ran a 1600+ in a A7V rev1.02? That's the only case I see PC133 even being an issue (that of course, took some very skillful bridge painting).
 
Well, this board is an ECS K7S5A, and it has 2 sdram slots and 2 DDR slots. it works out perfectly at stock speeds, where both the ram and cpu are at their manufactured specs :p but i just cant deal with that for much longer, so ive got some pc2700 on the way, and then i can get a lil more out of this rig :)
 
I used to have the K7S5A myself. But mine sometimes failed to load Windows even at stock speeds. It had something to do with the CPU thermistor that's located underneath the CPU socket: The BIOS readings turned out to be much lower than the actual CPU core temperature - as much as 20°C lower than the actual temp. Example: A BIOS reading of 40°C on the CPU temperature corresponds to an actual CPU temperature of about 60°C.
 
i had that mobo... it has shitty OC options... you can get an unoffical bios for it... i would say get some pc3200 first, that will make a big difference... then get a motherboard when you get more money... or get both a mobo and memory now if you have the money...

you will notice a big difference going from pc133 to ddr though...

oh yeah.. btw... you can OC with pc133 just fine.. i got a celly 800 mhz running at 8 x 133.. i am using the memory to its ability and OCing the proc...
 
you might be able to o/c fairly comfortably with the PC133, although you're already pushing the limits with it. Another thing you might want to check is if your pci/agp busses are locked (33/66 respectively). I have no clue if you can lock them with the K7S5A, since i have never used that board. Just a few thoughts.

(if you don't lock the PCI/AGP you will experience weirdness)
 
Two things:

One, ditch the mobo. Sorry, no matter what people say, ECS is suckage. If your looking for a good, cheap mobo that has some good o/c'ing ability, check out the Shuttle AN35N Ultra 400. I have the same board *costs around 60 bucks at newegg* and I have my Barton 2500+ @ 200x11 easy. Much better board for the money. The pc2700 will help a bit, but you should have got 3200 so you could hit a 200 fsb with the right cooling.
 
This board is not the greatest for overclocking, i know. But its what im on for now with my air cooling. The bios are unoffical Honey X bios ;) i can make it to 2.2ghz on this board which is pretty decent for air and pc2700. next will be the asus board a7V8x-deluxe and some geil pc3200...and some water to cool it all down :p
 
I have had 2 K7S5As & a K7S5A Pro. The first 2 overclocked fine when using PC-133, of course it was with a Duron 650 set to a 133 FSB (= 865MHz). I actually loaded the Honey X BIOS on the PRO & it works great at 150 FSB with a T-Bred 1800+ @ 2100+ (1725MHz). It actually processes SETI faster than my P4 2.8 at work. (3.3 hrs vs 3.9 hrs). It is running PC3500 OCZ 2-3-3-5 & it scoots. I also have a Shuttle AN35N Ultra 400 with an 1800+ T-Bred at 2.3GHz 11.5X200 (50% OC on air cooling @ 1.85V). The shuttle is nice because I paid $60 9 months ago & can freely manipulate the multiplier, voltage (VCore up to 2.0 volts) & RAM / AGP voltage. The T-Bred at 2.3 benchmarks between a 2800+ & 3000+ with Sandra, plus the dual channel memory helps (2X256 OCZ PC3200- 2.5-3-3-6). The board doesn't seem to like anything over 200MHz FSB - but it was $60. :D
