I have a ESXi server running 5.5u2 that has two switches: one internal and one connected to a 10GBe card. I have a Windows 7 client that is connected to both switches using the default E1000 card type. The issue is that it is only seeing about 5 MB/s which is gigabit performance. Is there any way to bump up the speed? Linux guests connect to the same switches are getting about 150 MB/sec which is about what I expect.
 
E1000 only supports 1-gbps. Max line speed for 1-gbps is around 120 MBps (not 5).

Upgrade to VMXNET3 cards and then double-check your settings. It's likely the bottleneck is not the network card configured on the VM guest (if performance is that bad).
