...Hi,
I have a creative soundblaster 5:1 live! with a set of bush 5:1 speakers.
I am running windows XP home.
All the speakers work fine in games and with films but when I listen to music (with windows media player 9x or winamp 5.02) the speaker settings in the windows audio defaults to stereo, sound comes from the front and rear left and right speakers but not from the sub or from the centre. I have to use the creative audio HQ to set the settings back to 5:1.
Any ideas or suggestions please?

I was going to remind you that music is encoded in stereo and is meant to be stereo unless you change it (which you shouldn't; this is excluding SACD/DVD-A), but you say your subwoofer isn't working either? I have no clue.

...cheers insult my intelligence why don'tcha - I know the chowns are stero hence 2 channels - left and right (whcih are then sub divided into front left, rear left etc)
So my question remains why no woofer/centre for music? (centre is just an extrapolation between left and right channels and woofer is just a cutof of low freqs).
Also windows then sets the sound inthe control pannel to stero desktop speakers - so stero in games too untill i change it back!

The sound card only sees it as a stereo signal and omits the center and subwoofer, I have to fiddle with the surround mixer and eax control panel to get the stereo into all 6 speakers on my Audigy 2 also.

Or I just use the receiver and let it mix the spdif stereo into 5.1 with Dolby Pro Logic if I'm in the mood for more than 2 speaker sound.
