Windows Explorer periodically freezes

I have a laptop with XP pro on it. Recently, for no particular reason, Windows Explorer has begun freezing while doing a windows search. This now happens any time I do a search, in fact, sometimes just bringing up the search tool, and not even commencing a search is enough to freeze explorer. In addition, this happens only once in a while while browsing files through Windows Explorer. I am wondering if there is a way I can fix this problem. Hopefully someone can help me, thanks.
