News.com says that the newly released patch for the Windows cursor flaw is not compatible with Realtek audio and networking components. Oops.

"Apparently the update is not compatible with Realtek," CNET News.com reader Dave House wrote in an e-mail. "We lost all Ethernet and audio functions. Removing the update and doing system restores brought the systems back."

Anyone else getting this? I have not arrived home yet but I want to know if this is wide spread or not.

No offense to the [tech]news sites out there but:

**If you have an issue with an update like this, don't go making a blanket statement that the update is [totally] broken and xxx hardware isn't compatible with it.**

I have installed this update on several machines with Realtek LAN, AC'97 sound and HD sound and have had ZERO problems. That does not mean there isn't some level of problem with the drivers, but making a blanket statement like CNET did doesn't help matters.

Asus W5Fm having problems with the sound, sound does work but my realtek HD audio control panel will not load at startup comes up with some message about DLL's Only bad thing is that I can't get into the audio control panel to enable my spdif to my z5500's:mad:

Realtek is not exactly obscure. I'm sure they would've tested the patch on hardware running Realtek audio and ethernet. I hope.

Bah, I've been fighting with this all day. Maybe I'll just break down and pick up that XtremeGamer deal Newegg has.

My sound is just fine. I noticed that he had to do "system restores"(note the plural on restores) to get it to work again, maybe it wasn't just the update.

Buddy of mine has a Bad Axe II motherboard. After this update, he stated that he was no longer getting a static IP address, but DHCP. So, he went to switch back to Static and it wouldn't assign (The fields were blank and he could not select to fill in). He thought it was weird because it happened right after the update. Anyone know what Network controller the BXII uses?

Running Vista 64-bit Ultimate here and I don't think it works fully. Although my network and audio appear to by fine, what's not working is that the cursor has periodic brief periods of pause now, it's about a 1/2 second pause that happens a few times a minute. I might try uninstalling to see if it goes away.

Is anyone else mystified that the fix for a flaw in opening an animated cursor is interfering with sound drivers?

It happened to on of my machines as well. The MS Hotfix fixed it. My only question is now why is the stuff even on that machine? It uses a Creative sound card.

So that's what fucking did it! I kept getting error messages that were (in laymen's terms) my realtek drivers were forceably moving a DLL from it's "position" in memory. My audio still worked, but had no clue as to why. I simply removed the drivers, re-downloaded them and installed them and they seem to work... god damn microsoft.

about 300 pcs and 90% have realtek in them. have only had to fix about ten so far, rest are working just fine. i love these problems that effect the same builds so differently.

Thanks Lamont for that link!

I was wondering wtf happened to my Realtek panel, at first I thought it was a sign that my overclocking attempt was too aggressive as it occurred right after I bumped my new machine up another notch.

Yeah, we're running all realtek stuff here. No issues yet. I would suggest more research before accusations fly.

What? I installed those updates on my system running Windows Vista which uses RealTek network and audio things, and I still have sound and ethernet capability.

I'm wondering if these guys simply are doing something wrong with installing these updates. I thought that there was a problem with an update from Microsoft 2 years ago, until I realized that the update wasn't installing correctly and that's why I was losing audio.

If by "these guys" you mean Microsoft then you may be correct. The bug has shown up on both of my computers and on each of them the patch was installed by Windows Update without any intervention on my part.
