Windows By The Numbers

LMFAO. You guys are too much.. Really.

So the cloud integration that allows you to keep all your settings, automatically sync files etc with skydrive and so on is not a feature of windows 8? I am sure MS would have a lot more complaints if they advertised all these features then made the default to just make a local account with none of those features. Yeah that would make a lot of sense wouldn't it DPI?

I don't think you've setup a Windows 8.1 machine using a Microsoft account using an 8.1 machine linked to the same account. There's a ton of things that get synced and setup automatically that would take a normal user a lot of time or require the help of a more technically inclined person.

You're assuming that people have stuff they want to keep and that they have more than one device. Most do, but not more than one that runs Windows. Most normal people have an iPhone or something and a laptop and maybe an iPad or Android (if they're elitist Google snobs) tablet. Windows 8/8.1 can't sync them and they would need an account with Microsoft to make it work which is lame.

Having more than one PC isn't that uncommon. Plus you're forgetting simply upgrading or moving to a new device.

From Windows 8 to Windows 8? Unless you're doing frequent upgrades, the number of people doing that at the moment is pretty uncommon. Maybe later though.

Firefox and Chrome had this sync to multiple devices for several years now. Where was the outrage then? Again, I think people are just finding too many other reasons to hate 8 because of one most disliked change: the Start Screen. You guys are blowing it out of proportion. The option not to use Live accounts is there.

The option is there but Microsoft do their best to con you into giving them all your personal info.

The difference is that Firefox and Chrome don't pretend like it's required as part of the installation process or required to surf the web and then label the setup screen something totall different from what it is actually accomplishing.

Microsoft is trying to lure unsuspecting victims into the cloud to mine their data. How many people realistically have more than one W8 computer and will actually use this? It should be a totally separate setup wizard that is clearly labeled: MICROSOFT CLOUD DATAMINING SOMETHING, not "Sign into Your PC".

This isn't only about syncing PCs, it's about integration and access of any data that one has in Microsoft's cloud, Outlook/Hotmail, Xbox Music and Movies, SkyDrive (or whatever the new name will be), etc. These are the same kinds of services people seem to be demanding on their phones and tablets but for some reason some want to argue against modernity in Windows. NSA, government spying, etc, the average person is living in the age beyond the local hard drive, that's just the reality. Microsoft can either adapt Windows to the times are be left behind in that average consumers expect in their devices these days.

Now I see you've obviously never installed Windows 8 because then you'd know there is indeed a warning when setting up your computer. Express setup versus custom setup - and what happens when you select Express setup - yes, all information goes to Microsoft, but not for the tinfoil hat scenario you're making it out to be.

Hey guess what? Google datamines too. OH MY FUCKING GOD STOP THE PRESS!

You should really get off the internet now friend. They're coming for you.

Well I for one find the functions very nice. If you have a couple computers in the house which many people do have, a different family member can login with their own account and have their settings in place. Especially good for a parent who wants to have an admin account on kids computers.

Second tons of people will lose drop or other wise destroy a computer or just want to upgrade. We can expect that MS will not just get rid of cloud sync so every time those people can more easily move from 1 computer to the next.

But hey its perfectly OK for google to operate almost entirely in the cloud but not OK for MS to have such features right guys? Pretty sure there was no option on any of my android phones to pick a local only account.

If you want to make an argument about most consumers not owning more than 1 windows 8 device then you have to also make the argument that even more consumers do not backup their files or back them up often enough. Now if they have a hard drive die they have a much of their stuff on skydrive.

Because Win 7 is such a jarring, jerky non smooth experience...

I really hate it when people make exaggerated or ill informed statements like that. None bother for a second to compare apples to apples in which a clean win 7 install is nearly indistinguishable from a clean win 8 install on like hardware.

I really hate it when close minded people block things out because it's different. I agree with the guy you were quoting. Windows 8 is fantastic! you just need to use it with an open mind and learn it before you judge it.

I agree, however, it is only good for consumers. Power users and business users, not so much. :( It has to do with the perspective that was used in the design of the UI, and Windows 8 was not designed for business productivity. :(

It's not about productivity but familiarity. Ultimately all Windows desktop software works on 8 as it does on prior versions. We can discuss Start Menus and Start Screens and full screen and not but in all of that there is no Silver Bullet that makes prior versions of Windows to 8 more productive, just more familiar.
